Production increased mainly due to abundant supplies from Vietnam and Indonesia.
According to the newly released report of the International Pepper Board (IPC), global pepper production in 2012 is expected to reach 320,155 tons, up 7.3% from 298,400 tons this year. In particular, white pepper output reached 248,250 tons and 71,905 tons of black pepper.
Domestic consumption of manufacturing countries in 2012 is forecast to reach 124,870 tons and exports will reach about 246,045 tons, an increase of 1.6% compared to this year.
Production of Vietnam – the largest pepper producing country in the world, is expected to reach about 110,000 tons in the new crop, an increase of 10,000 tons compared to this year's output.
The IPC also estimates Vietnam's export volume for the whole year to be 115,000 tons, and forecasts for 2012 to be 120,000 tons. Inventory at the end of 2011 is only about 10,000 tons.
For India, pepper output in 2012 is expected to decrease by 5,000 tons to 43,000 tons. India will remain the largest consumer of the producing countries with domestic consumption forecast at 40,000 tons, down from 45,000 tons this year.
Inventory at the end of this year of India is estimated at 15,370 tons and export next year is forecast at 32,370 tons.
In Indonesia, production will increase to 41,000 tons from 33,000 tons in 2011 and export in 2012 will reach 28,500 tons.
Malaysia's production stood at 26,500 tons, up slightly from 25,600 tons in 2011. Non-IPC countries are expected to contribute 47,000 tons of pepper next year.
