On Friday, a 13-tonne decrease in traded volume kept pepper prices at Kochi, stable, according to the news Business Line.

Kochi – India

The market has accepted the average price of Rs 309 / kg with pepper, while the price selected MG1 at Rs 329 / kg. The new crop was also offered at Rs 299 a kg.

According to Kishore Shamji, owner of Kishor Spices, farmers do not want to sell new pepper at lower prices, even if big market agents have reached the farm gate. Traders with processing facilities in Tamil Nadu also look to the main pepper growing areas in Gudalur and Erode to conduct commercial activities.

There are additional reports that some federal agents in Kerala have begun to move their processing facilities to Tamil Nadu due to the availability of cheap labor and lower freight rates, compared to prices in the Kerala market, Shamji said.

Reportedly, federal pepper processing facilities are currently concentrated in Tamil Nadu because of government incentives such as GST (goods and services tax) exemptions and subsidies, Shamji added that traders Karnataka-based employees who pay for APMC are also following suit.

Meanwhile, demand in the domestic market continued to be low due to smuggled Vietnamese pepper. Most of these transactions evaded the GST, which is a major threat to pepper communities, both farmers and producers as well as traders in the main pepper growing areas of Karnataka and Kerala.

According to the weekly report of the International Pepper Community (IPC), the price of Indian pepper of Malabar type is currently fluctuating at USD 4,337 / ton and Indonesian black pepper at USD 1,752 / ton, down 2% compared to Last week, while Vietnam's black pepper was priced at US $ 1,635 per tonne, delivered at export ports.

According to observers, the reason for the low price of Vietnamese pepper is because the delivery is mainly light pepper.
