The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has just increased its forecast of pepper export volume in 2012 to nearly 101.4 thousand tons with a value of about 742.3 million USD, up 6.1% in volume and 3. 7% in value from last month’s forecast.
Compared to 2011, the forecasted export volume of pepper for this year has decreased by 17.8%, but increased by 1.7% in value.
According to the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA), in some key pepper growing provinces, the country’s pepper output is estimated at 95-100 thousand tons, down 10-15% compared to the 2011 crop. in Dong Nai and Ba Ria Vung Tau with a decrease of 30% and 7.5% respectively due to the deterioration of pepper gardens in some areas. A number of pepper gardens in Gia Lai and Dak Lak died due to the impact of diseases such as rapid death, slow death, adverse weather, and improper care of pepper plants according to procedures and instructions.
Pepper output of India, the second largest pepper producer in the world after Vietnam, is also forecast to reach only 43,000 tons in 2012, down 5 thousand tons compared to 2011.
Concerns about the world pepper supply shortage, especially after the comments about reduced output in Vietnam and India, made the pepper market increase sharply again after a downward adjustment at the end of January 2012.
The export price of Vietnamese pepper increased sharply again after a downward adjustment at the end of January. Black pepper with a weight of 550 grams/liter was priced at 6,300-6,400 USD/ton on March 22. The export price of white pepper is currently at $9,400-9,500/ton, up 2.6% compared to the beginning of the year and up 36% over the same period in 2011.
Export prices of pepper in some other main producing countries also tended to increase in the first quarter. Currently, the export price of black pepper from India reached US$7,810/ton, up 25.5% compared to the beginning of the year. Similarly, in Indonesia, export prices of black and white pepper, respectively, $7,400/ton and $10,000/ton FOB, respectively, increased by 12.1% and 8.7% compared to the beginning of the year.
According to statistics of the General Department of Customs, by the end of March 15, 2012, the whole country had exported 20,374 tons of pepper with a total value of over 139.6 million USD, up 21.9% in volume and up. 73.1% in value over the same period in 2011.
