The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has increased its forecast for 2012 pepper export volume to nearly 101.4 thousand tons with a value of about US $ 742.3 million, up 6.1% in volume and 3, 7% in value compared to the previous month's forecast.
Compared to 2011, the export volume of pepper forecast for this year has decreased by 17.8%, but increased by 1.7% in value.
According to the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA), in some key pepper-growing provinces, the national pepper output is estimated at 95-100 thousand tons, down 10-15% compared to the 2011 crop. In Dong Nai and Ba Ria Vung Tau, the decreases were 30% and 7.5% respectively due to the degradation of pepper gardens in some areas. Some pepper gardens in Gia Lai and Dak Lak have died due to the effects of fast death, slow death, adverse weather and pepper care not in accordance with the procedures and instructions.
Pepper output of India, the second largest pepper producing country in the world after Vietnam, is also forecast to reach 43 thousand tons in 2012, down 5 thousand tons compared to 2011.
Concerns about the shortage of pepper in the world market, especially after the assessment of reduced output in Vietnam and India, have made the pepper market increase sharply again after adjusting to reduce in late January 2012.
Vietnam's pepper export price rebounded sharply after the adjustment at the end of January. Black pepper with a weight of 550 grams / liter was priced at US $ 6,300-6,400 / ton on March 22. The export price of white pepper is currently at 9,400-9,500 USD / ton, up 2.6% from the beginning of the year and up 36% over the same period in 2011.
Pepper prices for export in some other major producing countries also tended to increase in the first quarter. Currently, the export price of Indian black pepper reached US $ 7,810 / ton, up 25.5% compared to the beginning of the year. Similarly, in Indonesia, export prices of black and white pepper were US $ 7,400 per ton and US $ 10,000 per ton FOB respectively increased by 12.1% and 8.7% compared to the beginning of the year.
According to statistics of the General Department of Customs, by the end of March 15, 2012, the country exported 20,374 tons of pepper with a total value of over US $ 139.6 million, up 21.9% in volume and up 73.1% in value compared to the same period in 2011.
