VPA's report also said that after 10 years, Vietnam's pepper industry has made great progress and development. In 2001, the association had only 34 members but now has 105 members, attracting most of domestic enterprises and enterprises with 100% foreign capital.
Vietnam has now become the leading producer and exporter of pepper in the world. Vietnamese pepper is present in more than 80 countries and territories, in many major markets such as the US, Europe, Asia, the Middle East … Vietnam pepper has a dominant market share.
In 10 years, the average yield of pepper has increased from 3-5 tons / ha to 5-7 tons / ha, many households reached 7-9 tons / ha, particularly up to 10 tons / ha. Meanwhile, the average yield of major producing and exporting countries like India and Indonesia was only 0.2 – 0.3 tons / ha; higher like Malaysia and Brazil also reach 1-2 tons / ha.
In terms of economic efficiency, with an area of about 50,000 ha, accounting for 2.5% of nearly 2 million ha of 5 industrial crops but pepper accounts for over 8% of export value (export value of the lake pepper reached 6,886 USD / ha, 4 times higher than rubber; 3.8 times cashew nuts; 2.6 times coffee; 6 times tea).
In 2001, the country exported more than 50,000 tons of pepper, reaching a turnover of 90 million USD. By 2011, exports nearly 120,000 tons, only increased more than 120% of volume but turnover has increased to 665%, reaching a value of 693 million. It is expected that in 2012, exports may reach 850 – 900 million USD.
