The increase in output was mainly due to the abundant supply from Vietnam and Indonesia.
According to a new report released by the International Pepper Council (IPC), it is forecast that global pepper production in 2012 will reach 320,155 tons, up 7.3% from 298,400 tons this year. In which, white pepper production reached 248,250 tons and black pepper was 71,905 tons.
Domestic consumption of producing countries in 2012 is forecast to reach 124,870 tons and exports will reach about 246,045 tons, up 1.6% from this year.
Output of Vietnam – the world’s largest pepper producer, is forecast to reach about 110,000 tons in the new crop, up 10,000 tons from this year’s output.
IPC also estimates that Vietnam’s pepper exports for the whole year of 2011 will be 115,000 tons, and forecast in 2012 is 120,000 tons. Inventory at the end of 2011 was only about 10,000 tons.
For India, pepper production in 2012 is forecast to decrease by 5,000 tons, to 43,000 tons. India will remain the largest consumer among the producing countries with domestic consumption forecast at 40,000 tonnes, down from this year’s level of 45,000 tonnes.
India’s year-end inventories are estimated at 15,370 tonnes and next year’s exports are forecast at 32,370 tonnes.
In Indonesia, production will increase to 41,000 tons from 33,000 tons in 2011 and exports in 2012 will reach 28,500 tons.
Malaysia’s production stood at 26,500 tons, up slightly from 25,600 tons in 2011. Non-IPC countries are expected to contribute 47,000 tons of pepper next year.
