“Farmers in this commune have to uproot wooden pillars for 40,000 VND for living expenses, while previously each pillar was 250,000 VND. Someone uprooted whole pepper roots to sell to Chinese traders ”- Mr. Lieu was sad.

Nguyen Thi Thuy’s family (Phu Ha village, Ia Blu commune) is the focal point for purchasing and investing in local agricultural products. Ms. Thuy shared, in Ia Blu commune alone, there were 70 households who owed her a total of more than 3 billion dong, almost all were unable to repay their debts. Now, only expect these households to escape poverty soon to recover the original amount.
Mr. Phan Van Linh, Chairman of People’s Committee of Ia Blá commune, said: Pepper died in mass from 2016-2017 due to rapid and slow death of the disease with a total area of more than 400 hectares. Five high-price pepper, over 70% of the total of 1,466 households in the commune have borrowed up to VND 200 billion to invest in pepper.
“In the past, when the people won the crop, every family was economically good. Seeing that, people took all the money to continue investing, expanding the area, hiring workers at high prices. They took all the money they had and borrowed more money to invest in pepper. Now 979 people have to go to Ho Chi Minh City to work as hired laborers to pay off their debts. That is not to mention the people who work as hired laborers and then stay with the surrounding areas ”- Mr. Linh worried.
Looking forward to the bank freezing, debt extension
Talking with Tien Phong, Chief of Chu Chu district People’s Committee Pham Duc Ngoc said that the total area of dead pepper in Chu Pu district is 870 ha. The district government has received many applications from people asking for rescheduling, reducing interest rates or continuing to provide loans to facilitate production restoration.
Currently, the State Bank of Vietnam, Gia Lai province branch is directing banks in the province to have plans to coordinate with local authorities to apply measures to support people to restructure the debt repayment term. ; consider exemption and reduction of loan interest. However, through the people’s reflection, commercial banks have not planned to coordinate.
“The current situation is in need of support from banks to freeze and extend debts to farmers, help them overcome difficulties, try to reproduce and stabilize their lives,” – Mr. Ngoc said.
