Currently, farmers in the communes in Hong Dan district, Bac Lieu province are entering the harvest season of giant freshwater shrimp on rice land with the joy of “good harvest”.

Many farmers in Vinh Loc A commune have just harvested giant freshwater prawns on rice land and sold to traders at a high price of about 120,000 – 150,000 VND/kg, depending on the size (mainly for small sized shrimp). sizes from 10 to 15 pcs/kg are priced at 135,000 VND/kg). Excluding expenses, farmers still have a profit of tens of millions of dong/ha.

Mr. Dang Van Tuc, farmer in Lo Xe hamlet, Vinh Loc A commune, said: Local people have harvested the giant freshwater prawns raised on rice land, everyone is excited because of the high yield and high price of shrimp. . The family alone harvested 2ha of giant freshwater prawns on rice land, yielding nearly 500kg/ha. With 2ha, his family sold nearly 130 million VND, minus the family expenses and still made a profit of over 60 million VND.

According to Mr. Tuc, this year’s shrimp crop due to favorable weather conditions, his family’s giant freshwater shrimp grow very quickly, after more than 5 months of shrimp farming, it reached 10-15 shrimp/kg and was purchased by traders for 130,000 VND/kg (shrimp). 10 – 15 heads/kg) increased by about 30,000 – 50,000 VND/kg compared to the 2021 crop.

Mr. Nong Van Thach, Director of Ba Dinh Agricultural Cooperative, Ben Bao Hamlet, Vinh Loc A Commune shared: Ba Dinh Cooperative has 83 members, with a farming area of 150 hectares, currently the cooperative produces two crops. shrimp, 1 rice crop, currently the cooperative has harvested about 50% of the area, the yield is about 450kg/ha, with the selling price of 120,000 VND/kg, 12-15 fish/kg, minus the costs per member as well the profit is about 20-25 million/ha.

It is known that giant freshwater prawns have been stocked by farmers in Vinh Loc A commune since 2013. Initially, only a few households raised a small area. Later, many households saw that the economic benefits brought by giant freshwater shrimp were quite large, so they raised this aquatic species. By May 2022, the area of giant freshwater shrimp farming combined with rice will increase to nearly 3,600ha with 2,100 farming households.

According to people’s assessment, giant freshwater shrimp is easier to raise than other aquatic species in the current climate change conditions. Because, after the end of the rice crop, shrimp farmers do not depend much on salt water but can immediately stock them.

Time for stocking from 4.5 to 5 months is for harvesting. On the other hand, giant freshwater shrimp can also be cultured in combination with some other aquatic species such as black tiger shrimp and white leg shrimp. This way of raising helps farmers have a secondary source of income and make full use of the food in the farming square.

Mr. Vo Minh Huy – Head of Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Hong Dan district, said: Hong Dan has more than 13,000 ha of giant freshwater shrimp intercropping with rice (more than 1,000 ha exceeded the plan of stocking and raising) mainly concentrated in Vinh Loc A communes. , Ninh Thanh Loi, Ninh Thanh Loi A and part of Vinh Loc commune.

According to Mr. Huy, as of September 21, the whole district has harvested nearly 4,500ha with an average yield of 450-500kg/ha. Currently, giant freshwater prawns are purchased by traders at a relatively high price, ranging from 120,000 to 150,000 VND/kg depending on the size of the shrimp, so minus all costs, farmers in the rice-shrimp area still have a profit of about 40%.

“The rice-shrimp production model is very effective, adapting to climate change. Through the evaluation, the rice-shrimp production model, farmers earn about 90 million VND/ha/year, of which shrimp alone brings profit about 50 million VND/ha/year”, Mr. Huy said.

After harvesting giant freshwater shrimp, farmers in Hong Dan district will continue to intercrop giant freshwater shrimp, black tiger shrimp, and white shrimp, and at the same time start sowing a new rice crop in early October 2022.
