This year, despite the prolonged drought, pepper growers in Phu Yen province are very excited because pepper brings them high income. This is the second consecutive year that pepper growers have sold at high prices.

Farmers in Son Thanh Tay commune, Tay Hoa district, harvest pepper.

The pepper garden of Mr. Phan Quoc Nong’s family, in Tay Son village, Son Thanh Tay commune, Tay Hoa district, has an area of 2.5 hectares and is harvesting with a yield of nearly 4 tons/ha. In order to have a good green pepper garden, Mr. Nong must take care and invest methodically. Particularly for watering in this dry season, he has to water 10 hours a day.

“This year productivity is a bit low, but thanks to the price, it is about 10% higher than last year. Calculate the income per sao (1,000 m2) is from 50 to 70 million, “Mr. Nong said.

The 1.1 hectare pepper garden of Mr. Le Xuan Phuong nearby is also being harvested. Mr. Phuong said this crop is estimated to harvest 3.5 tons and with the current selling price, he also earns VND 800 million.

Son Thanh Tay commune is the largest pepper growing local in Phu Yen province with nearly 450 hectares, accounting for 56% of the province’s pepper area. People harvested pepper nearly a month ago and most of them have a good harvest. More exciting is that wherever farmers harvest pepper, traders collect it all there. The current price of dry pepper is from 220,000 to 230,000 VND/kg, an average of 1 hectare after deducting all costs can profit from 400 million VND or more.

Mr. Dang Si Nguyen, Chairman of Son Thanh Tay Commune Farmers’ Association said: “The whole commune has more than 1,000 pepper growing households, this crop has an average yield of 3.2 tons/ha. This is the second year in a row that the crop has been peppered and the price is good, so growers are very excited.”

Phu Yen province currently has nearly 800 hectares of pepper cultivation and is expected to reach an output of 2,280 tons this year, an increase of 355 tons compared to 2014. According to the plan to transform the crop structure to 2020, Phu Yen province will increase the pepper area. to 1,000 ha, mainly concentrated in two communes Son Thanh Tay and Son Thanh Dong (Tay Hoa district) with an area of 750 ha.

Phu Yen Department of Agriculture and Rural Development also organized a workshop on pepper development orientation with the participation of specialized agencies and good pepper farmers. However, because pepper cultivation is spontaneous at present, in order to help farmers grow pepper effectively, the authorities have well performed the key task of training and guiding farmers to grow pepper according to the production process. Good agriculture (GAP), using organic fertilizers, not abusing chemical fertilizers and pesticides in the prevention of pepper diseases, which are the weak points in the farming of today’s farmers…

Mr. Nguyen Duc Thang, Deputy Head of Agriculture Department (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Phu Yen province) said: “Tip is a long-term plant, so in the coming time, Phu Yen’s agricultural sector will focus on managing right from the seed stage. especially, establishments must have the conditions for production and trading of seeds to be allowed to operate. Then, building advanced models such as production according to VietGap process, applying fertilizer and water saving measures to reduce costs; minimize the tilling of the soil, causing damage to the roots, causing the disease to die quickly and die slowly.
