Vietnam’s cumulative coffee exports in the first 8 months of 2023 are estimated at about 1.2 million tons, worth more than 2.97 billion USD, down 4.9% in volume but up 3.3% in value. compared to the same period last year. It is forecast that coffee exports this year could reach 4 billion USD.

Although the quantity has weakened, the price of exported coffee, especially Robusta coffee – Vietnam’s main coffee type, has recorded strong growth in recent times.

Recording a new high in August, Vietnam’s coffee export price was estimated at 2,963 USD/ton, up 4.8% compared to July and up 25.8% over the same period last year. Cumulatively in the first 8 months of the year, the average export price reached 2,459 USD/ton, up 8.7% over the same period last year.

Regarding the market, in the first 7 months of 2023, Germany is the market importing a lot of coffee from Vietnam with 137,446 tons, reaching 300.5 million USD, down 8% in volume and 5.5% in value respectively compared to the previous year. same period in 2022.

Italy again recorded 106,475 tons and 234.5 million USD, an increase of 27.5% in output and an increase of 29.2% in value compared to the same period last year. Behind is the US market with 86,546 tons, reaching 202.3 million USD, an increase of 20.5% and 16.3%…

Coffee exports to the Thai market reached 16,616 tons with a turnover of 58.08 million USD, an increase of 11% in volume but a sharp increase of 52.28% in value compared to the same period in 2022.

Notably, the average price of coffee exported to the Thai market in the first 7 months of the year reached 3,495 USD/ton, a sharp increase of 952 USD/ton (equivalent to 37.4%) compared to the same period last year and high. 44.4% more than the country’s average coffee export price.

In the first 7 months of 2023, coffee exports to Germany, Spain, and Belgium decreased, but exports to Italy, the United States, Japan, Russia, Algeria, the Netherlands, and Mexico increased over the same period. last year.

According to data from the International Coffee Organization, Vietnam is the second country in the world in terms of coffee export market share (February 2021-January 2022 period), ranked only behind Brazil.

The Department of Crop Production – Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that Vietnam’s total coffee area by the end of 2022 reached 710.66 thousand hectares. Vietnamese coffee is grown in 19 provinces across the country but is mainly concentrated in 5 Central Highlands provinces, accounting for 91.2% of the total area of ​​the country.

To date, Vietnamese coffee products have been present in 37 major markets, of which 27 markets reached over 10 million USD, especially 8 markets reached over 100 million USD.Vietnam’s coffee industry is aiming for export turnover to reach 6 billion USD by 2030.

According to the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association, coffee prices are continuously increasing due to insufficient supply and demand. This year’s coffee output is forecast to decrease by 10-15%/year due to unfavorable weather. From now until the end of the year, coffee exports will still be favorable as demand increases while supply has not improved.

Besides advantages, this product also faces difficulties when domestic supply decreases. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that Vietnam’s coffee production in the 2022-2023 crop year decreased by 6% compared to the previous crop year, down to 29.7 million bags (60kg/bag). In particular, Vietnam is the world’s largest robusta coffee producer, but this crop’s harvest is the lowest in the past 4 years, due to higher production costs (labor, fertilizer), farmers tend to switch to coffee. to more profitable crops such as avocado, durian, passion fruit…
