In Dak Lak province, durian prices have fluctuated recently, sometimes reaching up to 90,000 VND/kg, but now they have dropped to only half, causing many traders to abandon or break stakes, and farmers feel sad because their gardens are ripening and falling. Faced with this situation, the Dak Lak Durian Association sent a document to members calling on the community to take responsibility for building a sustainable durian industry. solid.
According to the Dak Lak Durian Association, up to this point, over 70% of the province’s durian output has been harvested and sold. It can be assessed that this year’s durian crop has a good price, bringing high income and profits to farmers. However, besides the joy, there is the downside of the industry when prices increase too much, loss of control, the phenomenon of buying and selling competition, price gouging, and price chaos causing honest businesses to face difficulties. There was a time when durian was priced 20,000-30,000/kg higher than the actual purchase price.
Currently, durian prices have decreased, many businesses are losing money due to accepting contractual responsibilities towards partners, because of reputation, and because of the Vietnamese durian brand. There are businesses facing the risk of bankruptcy and have to anchor the garden, remove the stakes, and break the stakes.
Mr. Vu Duc Con, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chairman of the Durian Association of Dak Lak province, said that if association members and the community do not see clearly, there will be a lack of responsibility in construction. If the durian industry develops sustainably, the great risk of price fluctuations, stock abandonment, and pile breaking will continue to occur. This greatly affects the reputation and brand of the Vietnamese durian industry in general and Dak Lak durian in particular.
With the role of coordinating and connecting links in the industry’s value chain, the Dak Lak Durian Association recommends and calls on farmers, at this time, to negotiate and agree on a reasonable purchasing price with businesses. to help share some of the difficulties and risks for businesses.
Mr. Vu Duc Con said: “The Durian Association has a propaganda campaign to encourage people and businesses to calmly sit together, share information, share profits to jointly consume about 30% of the product.” the best amount of durian at the end of the season to bring about comprehensive success of the 2023 durian crop.”
