Statistics from the General Department of Customs show that durian continues to be the export fruit with the highest turnover in the fruit and vegetable industry.
In the first 9 months of 2024, the “king of fruit” brought in 2.82 billion USD, an increase of 63.3% over the same period last year and accounting for more than 50% of Vietnam’s total fruit and vegetable export turnover.
In particular, last September, durian export turnover reached nearly 674 million USD (about 16,850 billion VND), an increase of 24.9% compared to August.
China is Vietnam’s largest durian import market, accounting for over 90% of the export value of this billion-dollar fruit.
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen – General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association – estimates that by the end of October, durian exports have reached over 3 billion USD. It is worth mentioning that at this time in the whole world, only Vietnam has durian harvest, so it is almost a monopoly, especially in the Chinese market.
Regarding the forecast for export turnover this year, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen mentally calculated:Vietnamese fruit king” can bring in 3.5 billion USD.
In October 2024, durian harvest output will decrease significantly when durian in the Central Highlands is at the end of the positive season, while durian in the Western and Southeast provinces is in the off-season. Durian output nationwide is estimated at 154.2 thousand tons, down 15% compared to September 2024. Overall, for the first 10 months of 2024, output is estimated to reach 1,139 million tons, an increase of more than 20% over the same period in 2023.
Of which: Tien Giang harvested 361 thousand tons, Dak Lak 259 thousand tons, Dong Nai 87.8 thousand tons, Lam Dong 115 thousand tons, Vinh Long 57 thousand tons, Can Tho 39 thousand tons, Binh Phuoc 39, 5 thousand tons, Dak Nong 38 thousand tons, Tay Ninh 26 thousand tons, Gia Lai 26.8 thousand tons, the remaining provinces harvested about 90.8 thousand tons.
The shrinking supply of durian causes durian prices to increase sharply in October 2024. The purchasing price of beautiful Ri6 durian is from 100,000 – 105,000 VND/kg, an increase of 40,000 VND/kg; Ri6 durian at 85,000 – 90,000 VND/kg, an increase of 45,000 VND/kg. Beautiful Thai durian is priced from 130,000 – 135,000 VND/kg, an increase of 45,000 VND/kg; Thai durian increased to 115,000 – 130,000 VND/kg, an increase of 45,000 VND/kg.
