In Ba Ria – Vung Tau province, the hot weather lasts for a long time, falling right at the time when durian trees flower and set fruit, so many areas of durian bloom unevenly, when the trees form young fruits. Trees suffering from heat shock lose quite a lot.
Currently, the province has more than 1,300 hectares of durian, with the main durian varieties being Ri6 durian and Thai durian, with an average yield of 6 – 8 tons/ha, with an estimated output of about 4,937 tons.
According to farmers, durian is a difficult crop, sensitive to the weather and also has poor drought tolerance, so in hot and prolonged dry conditions, durian trees often have leaf tips and heads burned. leaves, affecting the plant’s ability to photosynthesize and synthesize nutrients. In particular, the intense sunlight for many months has caused heat shock to the trees, leading to premature fruit loss, risking a loss of this year’s durian crop.
Mr. Nguyen Hai Nam’s family, living in Tan Lap hamlet, Son Binh commune, Chau Duc district, has nearly 2 hectares growing Ri6 durian and Thai durian. He said that in recent days, record hot weather has caused his family’s durian garden to continuously lose young fruit, with the current rate of more than 30% falling, and the young fruit on the tree is still continuing to fall, making him very sad. worry.
“The weather is hot, so the durian tree suffers from heat shock, causing many young fruits to fall. If last year my garden harvested more than 3 tons, this year the risk is reduced by 30 – 40% compared to last year. The durian tree is a very fastidious plant, difficult to care for, in hot weather, but when watering the tree, ensure enough moisture. If watered too much, the tree will lose its young fruit, and the tree will suffer from prolonged heat. Leaves burn, fruit falls and affects tree growth, many trees even die,” Mr. Nam added.
The 1.8ha durian garden of Mr. Vo Ngoc Thanh’s family, living in Song Xoai 2 village, Lang Lon commune, Chau Duc district, has been planted for 6 years. This year, it also suffered heavy losses due to hot weather. long. Mr. Thanh said that this year he invested more than 80 million VND in the durian garden, but due to the prolonged heat, the tree did not produce many flowers due to being exhausted by the weather. When the young fruit set, the tree suffered heat shock. The fruit fell again, so he had to deal with it so that the tree could no longer grow fruit so that it could wait for next year’s harvest.
“Durian is exposed to hot weather, so the tree suffers from heat shock, leaves burn, young fruit or beans drop, and there is also a risk of damaged segments. This year’s durian crop, my family is sure to lose money, not as profitable as last year, even though the price is high, there is no output to sell to the market,” Mr. Thanh shared.
According to durian growers in Ba Ria – Vung Tau, the durians currently bearing fruit will be harvested around May.
Faced with this situation, the agricultural sector of Ba Ria – Vung Tau province recommends that durian growers in the province should fully water their durian trees. Use mist irrigation and distributed irrigation methods to save irrigation water. You should water durian trees in the early morning or late afternoon, avoid watering at noon.
In addition, use available organic materials such as straw, dry branches and leaves, and plant residue to cover and retain moisture around the base as well as the entire garden to limit water evaporation and maintain moisture. soil moisture. Along with that, keep grass and natural vegetation in the garden to cover and keep the soil moist; Add organic cover to the soil and nutrients to the plants to withstand prolonged hot weather.
