Pepper is one of the key export agricultural products, bringing high economic value to the locality. However, in recent years, pepper development has not commensurate with the potential and strengths of the province. To improve, Dak Nong province has set directions and solutions for sustainable pepper development.

In the structure of perennial crops, the pepper area accounts for a small proportion, only ranked fourth after coffee, rubber and cashew. In 2009 and 2010, due to complicated market price factors and the situation of pepper plant diseases, especially nematodes, wilting and slow death of pepper caused the pepper production above. Dak Nong is unstable, the area has increased but the output has decreased. Specifically, in 2010, the total area of pepper in the province was 7,127 hectares, an increase of 327 hectares compared to 2009, but the output was only 11,777 tons, down 442 tons compared to 2009.

By 2011, the disease on pepper was controlled, the price of pepper in the market was always high, domestic black pepper sometimes reached 155 thousand VND / kg, white pepper reached 200 thousand VND. / kg, so people have invested and expanded the area. Up to now, pepper has reached 8,356ha, the harvest output is estimated at 13,479 tons, concentrated mainly in the districts of Dak R'Lap (2,803 ha), Dak Song (2,433ha) and Cu Jut (1,324ha). , these are the key focus areas of the province for high yield and quality.

Among the exported agricultural products of the province, pepper always ranked second in terms of output (after coffee). From 2006 to 2011, export output reached about 67.8 thousand tons, particularly in 2011 was estimated at 15.3 thousand tons, mainly export markets are Singapore, Italy …

However, the situation of processing, consuming and exporting pepper in the province is still limited: after harvesting, mainly drying by manual method reduces the quality of products; The direct export units are few, most of the raw materials are sold in raw form to Chinese traders and enterprises in the provinces of Binh Duong, Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai … through the collection network of agents. Ly in the province; There are only 4 pepper processing factories in the whole province, with a capacity of 4,900 tons / year in Dak R'Lap and Dak Song districts, meeting the demand of processing about 30% of the province's output, on the other hand This is still limited in processing technology, mainly preliminary processing in raw form. Therefore, Dak Nong pepper is still not strong enough to compete with domestic and international markets.

On the basis of promoting the potentials and strengths, while effectively exploiting the economic value of pepper, the province aims to expand the area of 8,000 hectares by 2015 and 10,000 hectares by 2020, reaching an output of 10,000 hectares. about 30,000 tons, concentrated in two districts of Dak R'Lap and Dak Song; invest in upgrading 2 processing facilities in Dak R'Lap district with a capacity of 1,800 tons, planned to build 2 new processing facilities in Gia Nghia town, bringing the total capacity of the whole province to 6,800 tons / year. construct a new factory in Quang Tin commune, Dak R'Lap district with a capacity of 10.8 thousand tons / year.

At the same time, the province will focus on investing in production towards sustainable pepper development. Accordingly, by 2015, 1,200 hectares of mixed gardens and coffee will be inefficient, and after 2015, 2,000 hectares of annual crops shall be transferred to pepper; select varieties with high yield, good quality, disease resistance and suitable to replace unsatisfactory pepper gardens; implementing integrated measures to improve the uniformity and quality of peppercorns, for newly planted pepper will use living posts with fast-growing trees to lower costs and limit forest timber exploitation as posts;

At the recent “four-home” conference in Dak Nong, Mr. Hoang Phuoc Binh – Permanent Vice Chairman and General Secretary of Chu Se Pepper Pepper Association advised people not to expand the area because The harvest in the coming years is expected to exceed demand. Therefore, the province needs to study the long-term consumption market in the world soon to develop a plan for developing pepper area. In addition, it is necessary to focus on registering models, trademarks and branding along the sustainable value chain in order to effectively exploit the quality and export value, bringing high economic efficiency to the locality.
