Pepper is one of the key export agricultural products, which has brought high economic value to the locality. However, in the past time, pepper development has not been commensurate with the potential and strengths of the province. To improve, Dak Nong province has given orientation and solutions for sustainable pepper development.

In the structure of perennial crops, pepper area accounts for a small proportion, ranking only 4th after coffee, rubber and cashew. In 2009, 2010, due to market price factors and the complicated situation of diseases on pepper plants, especially nematodes, wilt and wilt diseases that died quickly and died slowly made pepper production in the world. Dak Nong is not stable, the area has increased but the output has decreased. Specifically, in 2010, the province’s pepper area was 7,127 hectares, an increase of 327 hectares compared to 2009, but the output was only 11,777 tons, down 442 tons compared to 2009.

By the time of 2011, diseases on pepper plants had been controlled, pepper prices in the market were always high, domestic black pepper was up to nearly 155,000 VND/kg at times, white pepper was up to 200,000 VND. /kg so people have invested and expanded the area. Up to now, pepper trees have reached about 8,356 ha, the harvest is estimated at 13,479 tons, mainly in the districts of Dak R’Lap (2,803 ha), Dak Song (2,433 ha) and Cu Jut (1,324 ha). These are the key pepper growing areas of the province for high yield and quality.

In the province’s agricultural exports, pepper always ranks second in output (after coffee). From 2006-2011, the export output reached about 67.8 thousand tons, in 2011 alone was estimated at 15.3 thousand tons, the main export markets are Singapore, Italy…

However, the situation of processing, consumption and export of pepper in the province is still limited: after harvesting, it is mainly dried by manual methods, which has reduced product quality; There are few direct exporters, most of the raw materials are sold in raw form to Chinese traders and businesses in Binh Duong, Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai… through a collection network of agents. management in the province; The whole province has only 4 pepper processing facilities, with a capacity of 4,900 tons/year in Dak R’Lap and Dak Song districts, meeting the processing needs of about 30% of the province’s output, on the other hand, the establishments This is still limited in terms of processing technology, mainly in raw form. Because of that, Dak Nong pepper is still not competitive enough with the domestic and international markets.

On the basis of promoting the potentials and strengths, and effectively exploiting the economic value of pepper, the province plans to expand the area to 8,000 ha by 2015 and to 10,000 ha by 2020 with an output reaching about 30,000 tons, concentrated on specialized cultivation in two districts of Dak R’Lap and Dak Song; invest in upgrading 2 processing facilities in Dak R’Lap district with a capacity of 1,800 tons. It is expected to build 2 new processing facilities in Gia Nghia town, bringing the total capacity of the province to 6,800 tons/year. to build a new factory in Quang Tin commune, Dak R’Lap district with a capacity of 10.8 thousand tons/year.

At the same time, the province will focus on production investment in the direction of sustainable pepper development. Accordingly, by 2015, 1,200 ha of mixed gardens and inefficient coffee will be converted and after 2015 2,000 ha of annual crops will be converted to pepper; select varieties with high yield, good quality, disease resistance and suitable to replace pepper gardens that do not meet the requirements; implement general measures to improve the uniformity and quality of pepper. For new pepper plantations, poles made of fast-growing trees will be used to lower costs and limit the exploitation of forest timber as pillars;

At the seminar “linking four houses” recently in Dak Nong, Mr. Hoang Phuoc Binh – Permanent Vice Chairman, General Secretary of Chu Se Pepper Association advised people not to expand the area because of the production. The amount of harvest in the coming years is expected to exceed the demand. Therefore, the province needs to study the long-term consumption market in the world soon to build a development plan for pepper area. In addition, it is necessary to focus on registering models and trademarks and building pepper brands along a sustainable value chain in order to effectively exploit export quality and value, bringing high economic efficiency to the locality.
