According to the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA), currently the major pepper growing area of Vietnam is the Central Highlands, especially the Chu Se – Gia Lai pepper region, some Chinese traders are present here and they push Strongly buying pepper every day, fixing the price at the time of delivery with the method of “money giving, porridge scooping” makes pepper prices increase sharply.
It is very difficult for agents to collect pepper from the people because farmers are still hoarding goods and waiting for prices to rise.
VPA has warned member businesses to be careful in signing long-distance delivery contracts when the goods in stock are still unavailable. Currently, there are a number of businesses that sign contracts from the time before Tet and deliver in March and April, which will certainly suffer big losses due to the current high domestic pepper price.
According to VPA’s report, the survey of key pepper growing provinces showed that the situation of pests and diseases in pepper gardens is also complicated. Many pepper gardens died quickly and died slowly, causing many farmers to suffer in Binh Phuoc, Quang Tri. However, a large amount of pepper area planted in 2007 (when pepper prices increased by over 70,000 VND/kg) began to harvest the first crop, so Vietnam’s pepper output in 2011 remained stable and equal to that of the year. with last year, reaching 110,000 tons.
Meanwhile, according to the International Pepper Association’s forecast, pepper production in all countries in the world will decrease. In which, the largest decrease in Brazil and Indonesia is due to pests and diseases and the influence of weather.
In the first quarter of this year, Vietnam exported 25,128 tons of pepper, with a turnover of 123 million dollars. Compared with the same period in 2010, the export volume decreased by 3,097 tons, equivalent to 11%. However, export turnover increased by 44%, equivalent to 37.6 million USD.
Especially in March 2011, pepper exports reached 15,639 tons, accounting for 3/5 of the export volume of the whole quarter. The average export price of black and white pepper also increased sharply compared to last year. The average price of black pepper in the first quarter reached $4,460/ton, up 159%, the export price of white pepper increased further, reaching $6,964/ton with a record price increase, 176% over the same period last year. before.
Currently, the domestic price in many places is above 100,000 VND/kg, especially in some places the price has increased to 106,000 VND/kg for black pepper and 160,000 – 170,000 VND/kg for white pepper.
