Several varieties of durian, including Musang King and Black Thorn, have started to bear fruit on a 20-hectare durian farm planted in 2018, Chinese media reported.

This farm is located in Maoming city, southwest Guangdong province. Mau Danh is a city that specializes in growing subtropical fruits such as lychee and bananas.

Currently, about 200,000 durian trees have been planted in Mau Danh, are starting to flower and bear fruit. Harvest time is expected in October. Durian growers in Mau Danh hope to expand the area based on the success of the trial.

Previously, Hainan was the only locality in China where durian was grown. Currently, the durian area in this island province is 2,000 hectares, mainly concentrated in the south of the island.

Chinese Durian

Durian is the hottest imported fruit in China, both in terms of volume and value. Last year, China imported 822,000 tons of durian, worth $4.21 billion, up 42.7% and 82.4% respectively compared to 2020.

Currently, Thailand is the only country licensed to export durians to China, while Vietnam and Cambodia are also looking to access the market, with strict establishment of quarantine barriers.
