Thailand’s efforts were rewarded when Chinese authorities confirmed that the Ping Xiang border checkpoint would reopen for Thai fruit arriving by rail from January 4.
The closure of the Donxing checkpoint left large shipments of durians and longan stranded at the border. Ms. Rachada said that Chinese authorities will arrange the necessary import documents so that the batches of fruit can arrive through the checkpoint in Ping Xiang.
Spokesperson Rachada has asked all stakeholders to cooperate, including drivers, to ensure their products are free of the SASR-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19.
Ms. Rachada said that China will not hesitate to close the checkpoint for Thai fruit if a shipment is found to contain the SASR-CoV-2 virus.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, 2 million tons of Thai fruit worth 148 billion baht ($4.46 billion) were exported to China between January and October 2021.
