Meanwhile, the domestic pork price is from one and a half to two times higher than the price of imported pork. Currently, the retail price of pork at domestic markets in Hanoi ranges from 100,000 to 150,000 VND/kg. At food stores, supermarkets… the common price of pork is from 68,000 to 180,000 VND/kg.

Although imported pork has a very competitive price compared to domestic meat, it is still very difficult to consume. According to food stores, frozen pork products are mainly for restaurants, bars, etc. After the pandemic, these clues also limited the import of pigs. According to experts, although the price of imported pork is lower than domestic pork, because of consumption habits, many Vietnamese only prefer hot pork, so even though the price is very low, it is difficult to consume.

According to the Import-Export Department, over the past time, imports of meat and meat products have continuously decreased compared to the same period in 2021 due to a slow recovery in demand. However, the decrease is gradually narrowing in recent months thanks to the reopening of restaurants, eateries and tourist areas, so pork consumption is higher.

However, imported pork is still not easy to compete with domestic pork. Especially in the context that domestic pork prices are standing at a reasonable level for both farmers and consumers. Currently, the price of live hog is fluctuating in the range of 60,000 – 69,000 VND/kg, down 1,000 – 3,000 VND/kg compared to the beginning of August 2022. In the coming time, it is forecast that domestic hog price will continue to fluctuate around 60,000 – 70,000 VND/kg.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in 2022, it is expected that the demand for pork will be about 51 million heads, with a herd growth rate of about 4.8% compared to the same period in 2021. To balance supply and demand, from now to the end of 2022, the output will meat of all kinds of the whole country must reach about 7 million tons, up 4% compared to 2021.
