The agreement was signed between Mekong Oryza Trading, Zhonghui Taifu International with headquarters in Hong Kong and Green Shield Africa Group, based in South Africa, according to Phnom Penh Post.
Cambodian Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery Veng Sakhon attended and witnessed the signing ceremony.
“The MOU will help boost Cambodia's export of milled rice to China and Europe, and now to South Africa, a new market,” Mr Sakhon said.
Mekong Oryza Trading Chairman Hun Kak said the MOU will last for three years, with the company planning to export about 100,000 tons of milled rice to China, Africa and Europe.
He also said the company planned to export the first batch of about 3,000 – 5,000 tons by the end of this month. Second export with 70,000 tons and the rest for the third export.
“We will find new markets outside of China and diversify exports to build competitiveness,” Lak said.
Cambodian rice exports increased by 2% in the first nine months of the year compared to last year, led by the Chinese market, a report from the Cambodian Rice Federation showed. Rice exports to China increased by 44%, while to the European Union (EU) decreased by nearly 30%, according to the report.
Total rice exports in the first nine months of the year reached 398,586 tons, up 2.3% from the same period last year.
