Recently, in Cam My district – Dong Nai appeared a “strange” pepper growing model. When we see with our own eyes and listen to a new garden owner, this “strange” can help growers reduce costs and make clean products.
The “strange” model of pepper production was applied by some farmers in Lam San commune and the result gave them a few tens to hundreds of millions of dong / ha / year. After a period of trial work that proved to be highly effective, they transmitted experience to each other for replication.
Plant grass flowers in the pepper garden
After the rain, the trees looked like they were wearing a fresh, green shirt. The owner of Nguyen Van Quang garden in Hamlet 2, Lam San commune, took us to visit a 0.5-hectare pepper garden intercropped with daisies. Entering the pepper garden, we seem to be lost in another world. Every time the green pepper grows, it is a period for luxuriant fruits. Between the two rows of pepper is the chrysanthemum butterfly wings, marigolds are blooming. Each colony of bees and butterflies of all colors invite each other to suck honey.
If not told before, accidentally coming here will think the garden owner is a poet or artist, artist or something new such romantic tree planting. However, the owner of the garden is a real farmer, year-round “selling face to land, selling back to heaven”. Mr. Quang said: “I heard that growing chrysanthemums in pepper gardens will attract all kinds of natural enemies to kill harmful insects so we should try. After planting, I found that pepper was less affected by pests and diseases, productivity increased, and every year, it was reduced by more than VND 500,000 per sao of money to buy pesticides for spraying. Besides growing flowers in pepper gardens, each time I took care of the fresh space, the faint scent of flowers also alleviated fatigue.
Unlike Mr. Quang, Mr. Tran Van Tan of Hamlet 2, Lam San commune, grows wild peanuts (wild peanuts) in pepper gardens.
Taking us to the vast pepper garden, among the rows of pepper are weeds growing lush as a green silk stretching with dotted yellow dazzling. Unable to hide his joy, Mr. Tan said: “This wild peanut carpet benefits me hundreds of millions of dong every year. I have more than 1ha pepper, a few years ago, taking care of traditional methods, the productivity was only nearly 3 tons / ha / year. For about two years now, I have intercropped wild peanut grass in pepper gardens, the yield increased to 4 tons / ha / year and halved the amount of chemical fertilizer.
Thanks to growing peanuts in pepper gardens, Mr. Tan's input cost for pepper is reduced by nearly 20 million VND / ha / year for chemical fertilizer. Plus the pepper productivity increased by more than 1 ton / ha / year so the last pepper crop, each hectare of Mr. Tan is more than VND 100 million.
Towards clean production
For a long time, most pepper farmers tended in the garden to clean the grass. Most people do not know, growing chrysanthemums and some other flowers, grass in pepper gardens can prevent many pests and diseases. Master Tran Thi Phuong Chi, from Dong Nai Plant Protection Department, said: “Countries with developed agriculture like Korea are heading towards eco-agricultural production. Specifically, they limit the use of pesticides, using only biological drugs that are less harmful to the environment and people. At the same time, they intercropped with useful flowers and grasses in gardens and fields to lure natural enemies to kill harmful insects. With this approach, input costs will be reduced for production, crop yields will increase and agricultural products will be hygienic ”.
Ms. Phung Thi Thanh Tu, Chairwoman of Cam My District Farmers' Union, said: “In the coming time, the District Farmers' Union will coordinate with the Farmers' Union of communes to propagate safe pepper production models for productivity and quality. High quality for members to visit, learn from experience and expand. The above models are easy to implement while the effectiveness is quite high ”.
Currently, input costs for agricultural production are increasing each year. In particular, much increase is still chemical fertilizers, pesticides. If the cost reduction model, productivity is increased, farmers' profits will increase. Master Chi also said that chrysanthemums and weeds can be intercropped in other orchards for very good effect.
