It is known that the pepper variety grown here is from Vinh Linh’s hometown, Quang Tri, brought in by workers of Vinacafe companies in the area. Appearing to be suitable for the climate and soil, Vinh Linh pepper tree in the Central Highlands grows very strongly, chosen by gardeners as the main seedling because of its high yield and good seeds. In particular, the recovery rate of grade 1 and special black pepper is very high, often used to process white pepper, so traders are very popular.
Especially, pepper is intercropped on the coffee area by clinging to the black cassava tree trunk to shade the coffee, live healthy and less pests. Therefore, it is not uncommon to enter the Cu Kuin pepper area to find pepper posts with a yield of up to 10 kg of bucket pepper. Meanwhile, other specialized pepper gardens are always threatened by pests and diseases, especially mass rot caused by nematodes.
Currently, Dak Lak province has over 4,800 hectares of pepper, including 4,000 hectares of pepper for harvesting with an output of nearly 13,000 tons of commercial pepper of all kinds. The most concentrated pepper growing area is in the districts of Ea H’Leo, Cu M’Gar, Krong Buk, Cu Kuin…
The high price of pepper has also prompted many households to propagate so that the coming rainy season will increase acreage and convert crops.
Today, export black pepper is being offered for sale at $5,900/ton for 500gr/l and $6,200/ton for 550gr/l (FOB). Meanwhile, Indian pepper prices have risen to $6,400/ton (C&F) for the US market and $6,300/ton (C&F) for the European market. It is known that the supply from Vietnam and Indonesia is being tightened because this season’s pepper is not in season.
