Exports from Brazil decreased by 42.4%.
According to the latest statistics just announced by the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), in 2024, our country will export 250,600 tons of pepper of all kinds, reaching nearly 1.32 billion USD. Of which, black pepper reached nearly 1.18 billion USD, white pepper reached 200.6 million USD. Thus, compared to 2023, export volume will decrease by 5.1%, but export turnover will increase dramatically by up to 45.4%. The good news is that the average export price of black pepper in 2024 will reach 5,154 USD/ton, up nearly 50%, and white pepper will reach 6,884 USD/ton, up 40% compared to last year.
Having a quick conversation with reporters, Ms. Hoang Thi Lien, President of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), said that up to now, Vietnamese pepper is very famous in the world market. Our country is the largest pepper producer in the world with 40% of output, exported to 110 countries and territories. Among them, the United States is our country’s largest pepper export market with 72,311 tons in 2024, accounting for 28.9% and increasing 33.2% compared to 2023. This is also the highest record export volume from year to date, up 21.0% compared to the previous record year of 2021 reaching 59,778 tons.
In particular, according to Ms. Lien, our country’s pepper processing technology is not inferior to any competitor in the world. Pepper products of Vietnamese enterprises have approached market standards, including difficult and specific markets such as the EU, UAE…
“We have nearly 200 pepper processing and trading enterprises; including 14 deep processing factories. In particular, there are 5 foreign invested enterprises, accounting for nearly 30% of the export market share. Enterprises Having a high-tech processing factory according to ASTA, ESA, JSSA standards has created many diverse products, meeting many different markets,” Ms. Lien emphasized.
According to the assessment of the representative of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Mr. Tran Thanh Hai – Deputy Director of the Import-Export Department, the foundations of position and internal strength have been built in recent times, plus prices continue to trend downward. The steady growth trend over the past time…are factors that encourage farmers and cooperatives to plan to promote farming, cultivation, production, and improve productivity in the coming time. These are positive signs for the 2025 crop.
It is forecasted to continue to “win” in 2025
Commenting on the pepper export market in 2025, Mr. Hai said that in 2025, global pepper output will continue to decrease. Information from trade deals shows that Indonesia and India are two “heavyweight” markets of our country that are forecast to reduce output due to facing many difficulties in weather conditions. Meanwhile, consumption demand is increasing, especially in large markets such as the United States and Europe… This is a favorable condition for Vietnamese pepper exports.
Discussing this issue, VPSA Chairman added that the sharp increase in pepper prices in the first weeks of the new year 2025 is a positive signal for the Vietnamese pepper industry. According to the association’s calculations, pepper inventories are currently low, while consumption demand from major markets such as the United States, the EU, and China is increasing sharply… The price of this item will certainly continue. escalate in the near future.
In addition, according to Ms. Lien, it is expected that Vietnam’s 2025 pepper harvest will focus on next February, March and April, 1-2 months later than previous years due to the impact of drought. Prolonged drought causes Vietnam’s pepper supply to become increasingly limited. Currently, China is planning to increase imports as soon as Vietnam enters this harvest season. Faced with that information, the price of “black gold” in the domestic market is also increasing.
However, according to industry experts, the market will still have many uncertain factors and unpredictable changes, so import-export businesses need to closely monitor developments and purchasing moves from partners to have purchasing plans. , reserve appropriately, avoid risks.
In the long term, the representative of the Import-Export Department recommended that Vietnam’s “black gold” export is facing a lot challenge. Among them, the biggest risk is pesticide residue, followed by environmental factors, reducing carbon emissions, sustainable farming models, and sustainable intercropping models. .or social challenges such as child labor, gender equality… This is a long-term problem that cannot be solved overnight. However, there can be no delay. The most important thing is to promote the connection between farmers – businesses, farming and processing with effective support from associations, localities and relevant ministries and branches. From close connection, there will be appropriate strategies and effective capital and technology investments.
“We need to focus on the problem of linkages to create raw material areas and improve the ability to meet quality and pesticide residue requirements for pepper products in major export markets.” , Mr. Hai emphasized.
In addition, Mr. Hai also recommended that export enterprises should take full advantage of signed Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) for agricultural products to increase turnover.
According to Ms. Lien, in 2025, the pepper and spice industry will focus on supporting farmers, cooperatives and businesses to improve product value and meet international standards for quality and food safety. . In addition, the association will support market expansion and continue to enhance the position of Vietnamese pepper in the world market.
