Recorded in December, the rate of fruit set in many pepper gardens in the province is very low compared to the previous season. Many farmers are worried that they will lose their income while purchasing prices tend to be better than last year. At the moment, pepper prices range from 50,000 to 57,000 VND/kg, more than 10,000 VND/kg higher than the same period last year.

Mr. Phan Kim Toan’s family in Thanh Hai hamlet, Thanh Luong commune, Binh Long town has an area of nearly 1 hectare planted with more than 1,000 pepper posts. After harvesting the previous year’s crop, the family’s pepper garden is still growing well. Although the price in the past few years has remained at a low level of around 50,000 VND/kg, the family still takes care of the garden normally. In early 2020, his pepper garden was invested a lot of fertilizers and plant protection drugs with the desire to increase productivity to compensate for low prices. However, at present, the pepper garden has little fruit, so Mr. Toan’s family does not expect more output than last year.

Mr. Toan said: “This year’s pepper garden in my house is growing well, no pests or diseases. However, during the flowering period, the pepper tree loses flowers and fruits a lot. Although my family also I have sprayed pesticides but still do not keep the fruit on the tree.Myself with many years of experience in growing pepper, the reason for the low fruit is likely due to the hot dry weather, late rain, so the humidity is not Low air makes it difficult for pepper plants to flower and set fruit.

As for Ms. Sam Thi Thao Anh’s family in Phuoc Minh commune, Bu Gia Map district, there are more than 2,000 pepper posts over 5 years old that are also in a state of little fruit and disease. Although the pepper garden is growing well, the disease dies quickly, causing the family a “headache”. According to the statistics of Ms. Anh’s family, there are now nearly 200 pepper posts that have died quickly and died slowly. According to Ms. Thao Anh, this year in the commune, there are also some pepper gardens with little beans. The low price is also the reason why some farmers reduce the investment cost by nearly half compared to the high price, so it greatly affects the growth and development of the tree.

Also in the situation of pepper trees with little fruit, the border district of Bu Dop is one of the localities with the second largest pepper area in Binh Phuoc province. Many households in the district when visiting the garden are “less happy” when the percentage of beans on fruit trees is low. In the past time, the gloomy atmosphere surrounded the pepper industry, many farmers also fell into a difficult situation, investment decreased.

For example, Mrs. Phan Thi Nhu’s family in Thanh Hoa commune, Bu Dop district received technical support from the district Agricultural Extension Center. Although Ms. Nhu’s pepper garden is still green and full of life, it is different from the dead pepper gardens around the area thanks to its completely organic production. However, by the time of December, observing the pepper garden with few fruits, it is forecast that her family will face difficulties. With 700 pepper posts, Ms. Nhu’s family collected about 2 tons in the previous crop. This year’s crop, according to Ms. Nhu, will be much lower than last year’s output.

“My pepper garden this year has less beans, maybe due to the influence of the weather. I also fertilize according to the recommendations and guidelines of the agricultural industry, but so far, the ability to collect is less than last year. If I spend less, I If the purchase price does not go up, it will be more difficult for the family to spend, “said Nhu.

Facing the situation of many pepper gardens in a state of little fruit, Dr. agronomist Nguyen Van Bac, Director of the Agricultural Service Center of Bu Dop district, said that this year’s pepper production of the province will decrease. The reason for the low fruit consumption is mainly due to the high temperature at the time of flowering and the inability to pollinate, leading to the condition of stagnation. Pepper after flowering, the sun changes for a long time, causing the cotton to drop. In addition, due to low pepper prices, farmers do not pay attention to investment and care, neglecting the garden, so the trees are weakened. Currently, the situation of pepper gardens is “degraded” very seriously, accounting for a very high mortality rate, about 30 – 50%. Therefore, when the plants are weak, farmers want to restore the pepper to grow like it was at the beginning, it is not possible. But if people focus on taking good care of and preventing pests and diseases, then the next season’s yield will certainly be much better.

In addition, as recommended by technical experts on agriculture, fertilizing is also very important and needs to be scientific. Farmers should choose a fertilizer with a moderate nitrogen content to enhance the flowering process better, combined with good farming techniques to help pepper gardens develop synchronously. Farmers also need to have flower processing techniques based on physiological, biochemical and scientific care processes for pepper plants, promote effective germination, wake up dormant sprouts, and stimulate flowering immediately. under unfavorable conditions. In particular, households should pay attention to the care of pepper gardens right after the harvest period, and at the same time destroy pathogens and fertilize plants to regenerate and grow strongly.

Currently, Binh Phuoc province has about 14,500 hectares of pepper. Facing the adverse effects of the weather, the price is “quiet”, pepper growers in Binh Phuoc are at risk of continuing to lose revenue. This year’s pepper crop is forecasted that difficulties and challenges will pile up when farmers have to take care of them and reinvest.
