On the morning of October 11, the Standing Committee of the Provincial Farmers’ Union coordinated with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to organize a conference on the potential for developing the anise industry in Lao Cai province.
Attending the conference were comrades: Hoang Giang, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee; Duong Duc Huy, Member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Head of the Provincial Party Committee’s Propaganda Department; Representatives of a number of departments, branches, localities and households are growing anise trees in the province.

Attending the conference were a number of experts and researchers from the Institute of Forestry Sciences (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development); Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association; A number of enterprises producing, trading and exporting anise products in Vietnam.
According to the report presented at the conference, anise has been grown for a long time in our country, concentrated in the Northeast provinces (Lang Son, Cao Bang, Quang Ninh, Bac Kan…) with more than 55,000 hectares. Anise is a small tree, 6 – 10 m tall, the stem grows upright, the flowers grow singly (or 2 – 3 flowers) in the leaf axils, the fruit usually has 8 separate branches; Flowering season is from March to May, fruit season is from June to September; In addition to anise products, anise plants also produce by-products, essential oils from anise leaves, which bring high economic value.


In 2023, Vietnam exports 16,136 tons of anise, an increase of 26% in volume (compared to 2022), with a value of 83 million USD; Growing anise can bring farmers 30 – 40 million VND/ha/year.
In Lao Cai, star anise was planted at Ta Ngai Cho (Muong Khuong), Bac Ha town, Nam Det commune (Bac Ha) many years ago and has grown well, now producing products.


From 2017 to 2021, the province has experimentally planted more than 40 hectares of anise in Ta Ngai Cho commune (Muong Khuong), 1 hectare in Ta Van Chu commune (Bac Ha), currently the anise area is growing well and has flowers. Regarding land potential, according to forest development data in 2023, the total area of unused forestry planning land in the province is more than 47,000 hectares; In highland districts, there are more than 50,000 hectares of land under cultivation of corn and other annual crops that can be intercropped or converted to anise.
At the conference, delegates discussed the development of anise trees associated with sustainable forestry development, reducing greenhouse emissions, and accessing the carbon credit market; results of trial planting of star anise in Ta Ngai Cho commune (Muong Khuong) from 2017 to present and proposed solutions, current status of the anise industry in Vietnam and development potential; pests on anise, effective solutions to develop organic anise products; international market demand and product standard requirements when exporting spice products, including anise; Technical solutions to increase the rate of flowering and fruiting…
Speaking at the conference, Mr. Duong Duc Huy, Member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Head of the Provincial Party Committee’s Propaganda Department emphasized: With the potential for developing anise in the highland localities of the province, Lao Cai wishes to Scientists and businesses continue to pay attention to developing this plant and building a chain of production and consumption of local anise products.

To develop anise effectively, the Head of the Provincial Party Committee’s Propaganda Department requested specialized agencies and local authorities in the province to promote propaganda to the people about the potential, strengths, and benefits. about this plant so that farmers can feel secure in growing it; Pay attention to investing in techniques for planting, caring for and intensively cultivating star anise to improve productivity and product quality for export.
From the results of testing in Muong Khuong, Bac Ha and market research, it shows that Lao Cai has the potential to develop anise products. Anise cultivation has high economic value, a large market, and is eligible to develop into a commodity value chain, bringing stable income to farmers; increasing forest coverage rate, contributing to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, selling forest carbon credits…
Speaking at the conclusion of the workshop, Mr. Bui Quang Hung, Chairman of the Provincial Farmers’ Association emphasized: Based on the presentations and discussion opinions of the delegates at the workshop, the Provincial Farmers’ Association will synthesize and report. province to gradually organize the development of anise trees in Lao Cai province.

In the coming time, the Farmers’ Association will coordinate with related industries and localities to visit, study and learn about the market, connect businesses in developing raw material areas and exporting anise products; Mobilize farmers to actively participate in building the value chain of the anise industry; Implement technical solutions, research and apply science and technology in seed production and perfect production processes suitable to the province’s conditions.
Through the workshop, the Farmers’ Association hopes that experts, scientists, and businesses will continue to support Lao Cai province, and hopes that industries and localities will agree on proposals with the province to have a common policy. , requesting households to continue to maintain, care for and develop the existing anise tree area.
