A report from the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA) said that in 2024, the pepper production area will be 111,313 hectares, down 3.2% compared to 2023, reaching 170 thousand tons, down 10.5% over the year. 2023.
In fact, our country has ranked first in the world in pepper production and export over the past 20 years, accounting for 40% of the harvest and 60% of the global export market share. Vietnamese pepper and spices are currently exported to more than 120 countries and territories, occupying many important markets.
Regarding the export situation, according to preliminary statistics of the General Department of Customs, Vietnam’s pepper exports in November reached more than 15 thousand tons with a value of more than 106 million USD, down 13.9% in volume and decreased 11.7% in value compared to the previous month. Accumulated in the first 11 months of this year, this Vietnamese product has earned more than 1.2 billion USD with more than 234 thousand tons, although down 4.4% in volume but increased sharply by 46.2% in value over the same period. 2023.
In terms of market, the US is currently Vietnam’s largest importer with more than 69 thousand tons, worth more than 377 million USD, a sharp increase of 43% in volume and 92% in value compared to the same period last year. . Ranked second is Germany with more than 15 thousand tons, worth more than 85 million USD, an increase of 76% in volume and a sharp increase of 138% in value compared to 11M/2023. The price increased by 35% over the same period, and was also the highest price among major markets at 5,648 USD/ton.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is Vietnam’s third largest importer with nearly 14 thousand tons, equivalent to more than 75 million USD, up 30% in volume and 107% in value over the same period. The average price reached 5,395 USD/ton, an increase of nearly 60%.
2024 is considered a year of great success for pepper and coffee growers. Thanks to rising pepper prices, pepper farmers are benefiting this year and have good income. However, this crop is also facing many challenges from climate change, increasingly complex pests and diseases, competition with other crops and rising production costs.
Currently, Dak Nong ranks first in the Central Highlands region and the whole country in terms of pepper growing area, but its output ranks second in the country, after Dak Lak. World pepper prices are also in an increasing cycle. In 2024, pepper prices have doubled compared to previous times, which is a motivation for farmers to invest heavily in pepper.
