Vietnamese durian fruit has created many significant achievements in the vegetable industry’s export activities over the past year. This is hope for durian farmers in particular and the fruit and vegetable industry in general.

In 2024, with existing advantages, at the same time, Vietnamese durian fruit is being focused on improving quality to continue affirming its export position and participating in the billion-dollar export industry.

Forecasts of continued bumper harvests

According to statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the country currently has more than 110,000 hectares of durian cultivation, yielding nearly 850,000 tons per year, most concentrated in the Central Highlands, followed by the Delta region. Mekong River, Southeast and South Central Coast.

The advantage in price and popularity of the import market has put Vietnamese durian fruit in a higher position than many other crops such as pepper, dragon fruit, rubber…

Mr. Do Ha Nam, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Intimex Group Joint Stock Company, shared that with any type of agricultural product that brings high economic profits, farmers have the right to choose. Currently, agricultural products such as coffee and pepper yield profits of 200 – 300 million VND/ha/year, while durian trees bring profits of 2 billion VND/ha/year.

With such an obvious profit difference, it is natural to convert crops with low economic efficiency to crops with high economic efficiency. Therefore, the “dizzying” increase in durian area over the past 2 years is inevitable. Of course, when converting, farmers also have to find purchasing links to be able to achieve high profits.

Above all, the recent export results of durian fruit alone have confirmed this. Never before has an agricultural product just reached the world market quickly brought in billions of dollars in turnover like durian.

Among the markets that consume the most durian, China is still a potential market for Vietnamese durian fruit. Mr. Nguyen Quang Hoa, Director of Duong Vu Limited Liability Company, assessed that Vietnamese durian fruit is currently very popular with Chinese consumers.

Compared to previous holidays and Tet holidays, Chinese consumers chose many other items to use, then during the recent Lunar New Year 2024, Chinese people still lined up to buy durian to celebrate Tet. This shows that consumers’ preference for durian is increasing and creates more room for Vietnamese durian to be exported.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, currently Vietnamese durian has reached 24 markets; Of which, export turnover to China accounts for over 99% of Vietnam’s total durian export turnover. Businesses predict that in 2024 and many years to come, China will continue to be the main consumer market for our country’s high-value specialty fruits.

The growth rate of the durian industry in the period 2019 – 2025 is forecast to be about 7.2%/year. This is considered a great opportunity for Vietnamese durian if it develops sustainably in the coming time.

Quality assurance to compete

Although Vietnamese durian fruit is popular in the Chinese market and accounts for the largest proportion of imports among all markets, dependence on one market inevitably brings more risks than the allocation of copper. to many different markets. Therefore, to maintain the market, it is imperative that Vietnamese durian fruit must always aim for quality to be given priority in selection among competitive products.

Currently, the Chinese market also has many requirements for the quality of exported durian fruits, thereby also warning that if durian growers do not focus on the quality of design and product quality, it will be difficult to take advantage of them. maximize the space of this market.

In addition, in the future, Vietnamese durian trees will still have to compete with many other countries such as Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia. Therefore, to continue to maintain its billion-dollar export position in the future, Vietnamese durian needs to maintain good quality, avoid overheating growth and only focus on quantity.

Mr. Tran Thanh Nam, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, recommended that durian farmers and export businesses should pay attention to ensuring the quality, design and origin of goods when exporting to China. China, so that Vietnamese durian can stand firmly in this market.

According to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, the opportunity to export durian to the Chinese market in particular and other markets in general is still very large. In particular, countries that grow this fruit only harvest it seasonally, while in our country it is harvested all year round.

This is the monopoly position of Vietnamese durian. By 2024, durian output will increase, with more growing area codes and packaging facilities eligible for export, the turnover could reach about 3.5 billion USD.

According to the assessment of agricultural experts, to expand the export market for Vietnamese durian not only in China but also worldwide, Vietnamese durian needs to focus on the stages of preservation, preliminary processing, processing to add value.

Furthermore, durian growing areas and packaging facilities must have appropriate management measures to eliminate pests, especially fruit flies and mealybugs; Meets food safety and hygiene requirements, does not contain excess pesticide residue; Follow proper packaging specifications and information on packaging to ensure accurate traceability…
