According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, China accounts for about 58% of the share of Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports. However, this figure is 10 percentage points lower than in the first 10 months of 2019.

Exports to China plummeted, leading to a drop in fruit and vegetable exports during the month tenBecause vegetables and fruits exported to the Chinese market are always accounted for billions high esteem.

Therefore, despite the value of vegetables and fruits exported to markets such as America, Thailand, Korea, Netherlands, Australia and Russia for the month ten increased sharply, but still could not offset the decrease in exports to the Chinese market, due billions The export weight to these markets remains low.

Talking to the writer, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, said that from the beginning of the year until now, it was affected by the epidemic. COVID-19 so it is more difficult to sell goods.

In addition, recently, the city of Shanghai requires all high-risk imported frozen foods stored, processed and sold in Shanghai City to be in transit warehouses for testing. COVID-19 and packaging sterilization, applied from 0h00 on 11/16, deliveries will be made online.

This makes it even more difficult for frozen vegetables and fruits to be exported to this market. Mr. Nguyen said that the strengthening of Shanghai quarantine will slow down the delivery of businesses.

Previously, delivery took only 3 days to deliver to customers, but now it takes up to 5 days. This affects the quality of the vegetables.

According to the assessment of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, vegetables and fruits are a group of goods with a sharp decrease in the structure of agricultural products exported to the Chinese market. Exporting vegetables and fruits to the Chinese market is increasingly difficult.

The reason is influence of translation COVID-19 making consumption in the Chinese market plummeted; China’s policy on management of border activities is constantly changing in the direction of tightening quarantine and food safety, traceability and many detailed requirements on packaging facilities, labels …

In addition, the standard of living of Chinese people has been improved, consumers are increasingly demanding for the quality and safety of agricultural products and foodstuffs. Therefore, the quality of vegetables and fruits has a higher requirement than before.

Despite the difficulties, China is still a very potential market for Vietnamese fruits and vegetables, with more than 1.4 billions People, along with 50 million tourists annually create a market with huge consumer power.

According to the World Trade Organization (WTO), China imports about 160 annually billions USD for agricultural products, in which vegetables and fruits account for 9-10 billions USD.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade said that in order to boost exports to this market, businesses need to improve the quality of agricultural products, to meet Chinese standards and requirements.

Taking advantage of EVFTA benefits is not much

This agreement has the advantage of reducing tariffs, but goods going to Europe require very high quality that cannot be quickly met by production to meet the European market. Actually, the business has orders from Europe, this market has great demand but there is no goods to deliver.

“It is the responsibility of the farmer, the producer of the raw material, to comply with the GlobalGAP standard to be eligible to export to the EU, especially for pineapple.

If the fruit and vegetables are not up to the standard, when exporting to Europe, the partner will return the goods and the business will lose money. EVFTA helps export of fruits and vegetables to the EU increase but not too breakthrough “, Mr. Nguyen said.

Representative of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association said that the export of vegetables and fruits to the EU market in 2020 will only increase by 10% at maximum due to the impact of the epidemic. COVID-19 and the lack of standard ingredients.

This year it is difficult to achieve the export target at the beginning of the year

Expected month in November, fruit and vegetable export turnover will only reach 3 billion USD. To December, it can export another 3 million USD.

“So in 2020, the export turnover of vegetables and fruits can only reach $ 3.3 billion, down 10% compared to last year and not reach the target of the whole year of 4 billion USD,” Nguyen said.

Not only facing difficulties in the Chinese market, but also in Thailand, Vietnamese vegetables and fruits have faced technical barriers.

The Import and Export Department said that the prospect of exporting Vietnamese fruits and vegetables to Thailand in the coming time will face many difficulties, as agricultural products exported to Thailand are required. carefully technology, equivalent to export standards to Europe.

In particular, after Thailand issued new standards on pesticide residues on imported agricultural products, a few export orders of Vietnamese dragon fruits to Thailand were returned, due to the violation of regulations on plant protection drug residues.

Until now, Thailand has officially licensed four types of Vietnamese fruits to this market, namely red and white flesh dragon fruit, mango, longan, and lychee.

However, the Department of Agricultural Product Processing and Market Development was optimistic: “In general, the outlook for fruit and vegetable exports in the last months of 2020 is expected to be positive due to the increase in Chinese import demand and cooperation. Vietnam – EU Free Trade Agreement becomes clear “.
