The average export price of cassava and cassava products in the first 10 months of 2020 is estimated at 353.8 USD / ton, down 9, 3% over the same period last year, this is also the month of China National Day holiday, so the export transaction of tapioca in Mong Cai and Lang Son is temporarily suspended. China is still the main export market in the first 9 months of 2020 when accounting for 90.6% of the market share of Vietnam’s cassava and cassava products. Specifically, the total export output of cassava and cassava products to China in the first 9 months of 2020 reached 1.75 million tons, equivalent to 614 million USD, up 13.5% in volume and 1.6% in terms of volume. value over the same period in 2019. Taiwan, Malaysia are also 2 strong growth markets for importing cassava and cassava products of Vietnam in the first 9 months of 2020, with growth in export value respectively 29.2% and 15.4% over the same period last year. The average export price of cassava chips to China in September reached 228 USD / ton, up 4% compared to August 2020, but down 11% over the same period last year.

In terms of product structure: (i) Cassava chips, exports in the first 10 months of 2020 increased sharply, estimated at 547 thousand tons, equivalent to $ 126 million, up 104% in volume and 117% in value over the same period. last year. This growth was achieved because China purchased a large amount of iron from Vietnam in the first half of 2020 to serve the animal feed production and ethanol production. Cassava chip export price averaged in 10 months at 230 USD / ton, up 7% compared with 216 USD / ton of the same period last year. (ii) Tapioca, export in the first 10 months of 2020 was estimated at 1.59 million tons with a value of $ 632 million, down 3% in volume and 8% in value over the same period in 2019. Price average cassava starch export reached 396 USD / ton, down 5% over the same period last year.

In the domestic market, the price of fresh cassava roots in the new crop as of October 20, Tay Ninh / Binh Phuoc region increased slightly, fluctuating at 2,670 – 2,700 VND / kg due to the decrease in cassava delivered to the factory and CNY exchange rate. / VND continues to increase. Meanwhile, many factories in Tay Ninh and the Central region also had to suspend operations due to lack of raw materials. Cassava chips inventories in the 2019-2020 crop of Vietnam are almost exhausted. Meanwhile, the crop 2020-2021 in the Tay Ninh area continues to face difficulties due to the quantity of cassava coming from Cambodia less with higher prices than in previous years. This has put great pressure on the supply of cassava chips in Vietnam.

It is forecasted that the export transactions of cassava chips and cassava starch in the coming time will be more exciting when the demand for buying from China increases and Vietnam is entering the harvest. However, supply pressure will still be a threat to processing factories when domestic inventories are exhausted, leaf mosaic disease continues to spread at a heavier level than last year and cassava from Cambodia’s export market. The number of imports is low due to severe flooding in most of the provinces when heavy rains last from the beginning of September.
