According to the Department of Livestock Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), among more than 100 pig breeding establishments, more than 109,000 sows, the domestic units and enterprises account for about 67% of the total base and 37% of the total sows; FDI enterprises account for about 33% of the total number of establishments and about 63% of the total sows.

Currently the country has more than 2.7 million sows and more than 50,000 boars; The reproductive productivity of imported sows in Vietnam is about 24-27 heads / sow / year (the world is 26-30 heads / sow / year).

According to the registered data, in 2020, businesses will import 12,000 breeding pigs. As of April 18, the number of imported source pigs was 3,016, an increase of 133% compared to 2018 and an increase of 21% compared to 2019. Some businesses registered but had not imported due to COVID-19 epidemic, difficult especially shipping from exporting countries to Vietnam.

According to the evaluation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the number of piglets imported and registered for import in 2020 will serve the replacement of imported pig herds from 2016 according to the cycle to the time of elimination, partly offset the reduce sow breeding herds due to African swine fever and serve sow growth of 0.5% / month.

At the conference on increasing imports and removing difficulties in importing breeding pigs on April 20, some suggested that when domestic supply did not meet the demand as well as the high price of live pigs, The import of breeding pigs to restore the herd is considered a solution to support farmers, contributing to stabilizing the price of pork.

However, experts point out that in recent years, due to the impact of the African swine cholera epidemic, the world's cavalry breeds, grandparents and parents are mostly affected, including Vietnam. Not an exception.

Currently, the Chinese government is planning to import millions of breeding pigs by 2020 to restore the swine herd after the impact of the African swine cholera epidemic.

Currently, due to the great impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, circulation and logistics have been interrupted, many countries have stopped exporting original breeds, especially the fierce competition from Chinese livestock enterprises that makes the import. Pig breeding of Vietnamese livestock enterprises from the end of 2019 has encountered many difficulties.

Therefore, this is also a lesson for our country's breeding industry, which requires a longer and more proactive strategy and plan. In particular, it is necessary to master the entire chain system of the seed industry from the specific, the grandparents to the parents to be able to master the livestock industry in the future.

According to Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien, in order to take the initiative in the source of breeding pigs for production, in the immediate future, localities should organize good control of the disease, especially African swine fever.

Enterprises actively import source breeds to increase breeding and supply breeding pigs to ensure quality and safety of diseases. Credit institutions have preferential policies on interest rates for farmers to re-grow herds, increase their herds and import enterprises …
