During a recent field trip to a pepper farm in Kampot province, Pan Sorasak, Minister of Trade of Cambodia, explained that improving the quality of pepper will help promote the brand of Kampot pepper (which has been geographical indications) in the European Union (EU) market.

The Minister also advised pepper farmers, producers, cooperatives and associations to pay attention to cleaning, packaging, preserving and using organic fertilizer, etc. to make Kampot pepper become more famous. in both domestic and foreign markets.

Cambodian pepper has been granted a Geographical Indications (GI) certificate from the EU in 2016. Geographical indications are signs used to indicate products originating from specific regions, localities, territories or countries. be.

Use of Geographical Indications plays an important role in certifying product quality, is carried out in the traditional manner, or enjoys a certain reputation due to its geographical origin.

The Kampot Pepper Trade Promotion Association has 455 members including farmers and companies that own pepper plantations.

As of 2019, Cambodian pepper plantations cover an area of ​​about 290 hectares with a total yield of more than 126 tons.

The association sold black pepper at US $ 15,000 / ton, while the price of red and white pepper were US $ 25,000 / ton and US $ 28,000 / ton respectively.
