Kien Giang exceeds production
Kien Giang is the province with the largest rice production area in the Mekong Delta region, with over 290,000 ha, and is a coastal province, so if saline water is not well controlled, it will cause great damage. Lessons learned from the 2015-2016 historic drought have helped agriculture as well as farmers have effective solutions to prevent salinity.
Dr. Do Minh Nhut, Deputy Director of Kien Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that based on the forecast, right from the end of 2019, the province has implemented the prevention and combat against drought and saltwater intrusion in the dry season 2019-2020. .
In particular, for agricultural production, the most heavily affected areas are coastal areas from Rach Gia City to Ha Tien City, along Cai Lon and Cai Be rivers and districts in U Minh Thuong.
Sub-Department of Irrigation has operated an irrigation system in Rach Gia City, along Cai Be River in Chau Thanh District (55 sluices), U Minh Thuong (17 sluices) to prevent salinity and keep freshness effectively.
In addition, localities in saline affected areas have reinforced and built new seasonal dams to enhance protection of Winter-Spring rice crop 2019-2020 and continue to prevent drought and salinity for summer-autumn crop in 2020 (total of nearly 200 3 of which are Larsen steel sheet piles, preventing large estuaries from entering the sea).
According to Dr. Do Minh Nhut, judging this year, there will be severe drought, lack of irrigation water at the end of the crop so the rice sowing time frame has been pushed up as soon as possible. The whole province sowed 289,051 / 290,000 ha of DX rice as planned. In particular, about 15,000 hectares in the districts of U Minh Thuong, where dependence mainly on the earliest sun sowing, is harvested in January 2020.
Approximately 80,000 ha of U Minh Thuong, An Bien, An Minh, Chau Thanh, Giong Rieng, Go Quao, Tan Hiep, Rach Gia, Hon Dat, Kien Luong and Giang Thanh districts will be harvested in February. the harvest is completed around mid-March 2020.
Thanks to proactive implementation of both structural and non-structural solutions, prevention of drought has been effective, so this year, DX rice has suffered damage but at a very low rate. Photo: Le Hoang Vu. |
According to the report to March 5, the whole Kien Giang province has harvested 156,825 hectares of DX rice, the average yield is estimated at 7.29 tons / ha, the output is estimated at over 1.1 million tons of commodity rice.
“Thanks to the proactive implementation of both structural and non-structural measures, prevention of drought has been effective, so this year DX rice has suffered losses but at a very low level. Rice with few pests and diseases, good harvest, high productivity, such as: Tan Hiep averages 8 tons / ha, Giong Rieng 7.8 tons, other districts are Giang Thanh, Hon Dat, Chau Thanh, Go Quao all reach 7 tons / ha or more.
The industry's plan is to reach 7.02 tons / ha but actually reaches 7.29 tons / ha, partly compensating for the damaged area and the total harvest output is estimated to exceed 2.027 million tons. “, Dr. Do Minh Nhut said.
An Giang has a double victory
In An Giang, the Winter-Spring rice crop of 2019-2020 produces 234,000 ha, so far has harvested nearly 70% of the area. Although harvested later than Dong Thap, Vinh Long, Hau Giang and Can Tho City … but farmers here are very excited because of winning rice crop, high prices.

Mr. Nguyen Si Lam, Director of An Giang Agriculture and Rural Development, said that in the winter-spring crop of 2019-2020, the rice production areas in An Giang has made contracts to link rice consumption with 21 food businesses, covering an area of nearly 28,300 ha. . Up to now, there have been 9 enterprises purchasing with an area of 1,578 ha, output of 12,306 tons (reaching 6.21% of the plan).
At present, regions with associated contracts in An Giang have also purchased about 20% of the contracted area, with an agreed price between businesses and farmers. On average, 1 hectare of farmers achieves an average yield of 6.8-8 tons / ha, after deducting expenses, the profit is from 24 to 32 million VND / ha (depending on the variety of rice and paddy fields).
According to Mr. Lam, agricultural production of the province is in very difficult conditions such as the outbreak of African swine cholera, the market and the price of rice are unstable. Drought, flood, landslides are complicated. But this year's DX crop can confirm completely victory in both aspects of yield and price.
To win the DX crop this year, the agricultural sector has flexibly implemented the restructuring of crops, shifting from rice land to growing crops with high economic value, partly increasing crops for some types. Colored crops are on the market. Proactively in directing production in order to have timely plans and solutions with developments affecting production.
Based on the weather forecast combined with the actual situation in the locality from which to set a seeding schedule and specific solutions for rice production in 2020.
Criteria are set out: over 70% of the area using high quality rice seeds for export, sowing rice in rows, reducing the density of sowing, reducing the fertilizer application of excess nitrogen, reducing the use of pesticides …
Promoting synchronous application of integrated models and solutions in rice production such as: integrated pest control IPM, “3 reductions and 3 increases”, “1 to 5 reductions”, combined with flower growing on the banks of fields, building large sustainable commodity-producing areas to ensure food safety and environmental protection.
Soc Trang and Can Tho hit big seasons
DX rice is in the harvest season, farmers said: Fresh rice began to increase slightly by VND 100-200 / kg compared to the previous week. In the sweet alluvial area around Can Tho City and the coastal area of Soc Trang, many rice fields have been harvested.
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Summer, Director of Can Tho Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: This is a very exciting season for farmers, the highest-yielding rice, the average fresh rice reached 7.2 tons / ha, much higher than the average yield above 5-6 tons / ha in the previous 5 years.
With over 79,200 ha, the output of Can Tho DX rice is over 570,000 tons. That is because the local farmers apply the right seasonal calendar, favorable weather, few pests and diseases. Enterprises, cooperatives and traders buy rice from the field to the storehouse. The price of fresh rice sold exceeds VND 5,000 – 5,400 / kg, depending on the variety and quality.

From Can Tho to the south of Hau river in Soc Trang province, rice farmers said the conversion and received unexpected effects. In many early rice fields, the coastal area has a good harvest and high productivity thanks to the early crop.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phuoc, Department of Crop Production – Plant Protection Soc Trang, said: The total area of DX rice seedlings more than 180,000 ha.
Up to now, the area of early winter-spring rice, winter-spring rice harvested over 110,000 ha, the average yield is over 6.5 tons / ha, 200-300 kg / ha higher than last year's crop Achieving the above results is due to the guidance of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development adjusting the seasonal calendar to avoid drought and salinity at the beginning of the season. With more than 37,000 ha of DX rice in the coastal areas of Long Phu and Tran De districts, sowing early 10-15 days.
Up to now, all rice in this area has been harvested, which is considered as an initial victory. And even though Soc Trang province reduced 20,000 ha of late-winter rice, not to sow for fear of drought, lack of water, the output of DX rice was impressive with nearly 1.2 million tons.
On the other hand, Soc Trang is changing the rice cultivation structure towards gradually increasing the proportion of specialty aromatic rice accounting for over 51%. In which, ST rice and Tai Nguyen rice have nearly 17,000 ha, average yield reaches 5.5-6 tons / ha.
In particular, farmers sell specialty aromatic rice at a price of 7,000-7,400 VND / kg (fresh rice), the highest level compared to other rice varieties.
In addition, high-quality fragrant rice varieties such as OM5451, OM6976, Dai Thom 8 … account for over 43% of the structure. , OM576, is currently reduced to 2.1% of its area.
Mr. Hong Minh Nhat, Head of Economic Division, Nga Nam Town (Soc Trang), said: This region currently has 5,000 ha of ST24 rice with pepper. Particularly for OM4900 and Dai Thom 8, the price of fresh rice is always above VND 5,200 / kg.
According to the Department of Industry and Trade of Can Tho City, from the beginning of the year to the end of February, enterprises in centralized industrial parks have purchased and processed with a stock of over 51,200 tons of rice and 14,600 tons of rice.
In addition, businesses outside the area with purchasing warehouse located in the city purchased 25,000 tons of rice and nearly 2,900 tons of rice. Particularly in the first 2 months of the year, rice still accounted for a large proportion in the group of major export products, estimated to reach over 140,000 thousand tons, an increase of more than 6% compared to the same period in 2019, with an export turnover of about 64 million. USD, up over 8.8% over the same period.
Leading enterprises increase the pace of production activities and sign contracts, faster delivery progress with partners signed earlier this year, exported to the markets of the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Germany , Arabic…
