Discussions about the use of chlorpyrifos and chlorpyrifos-methyl in European countries have been a hot topic in recent months. Originated with the statement of the European Food Safety Authority published on July 31, 2019 regarding the results of the evaluation of the active ingredient chlopyridos on human health when the active ingredient is deemed not to meet permissible criteria for human health as stated in Article 4 of Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009.

The EFSA statement was answered in the form of voting by European countries to ban the use of pesticides with the active ingredients chlorpyrifos and chlorpyrifos-methyl at a meeting of the Standing Committee on Plants and Animals. food and feed (SCOPAFF) on December 6, 2019. Subsequently, the Commission's Draft Regulation (EU) regarding the amendment of maximum residue levels (MRL) for chlorpyrifos and chlorpyrifos-methyl contained in some products was submitted to the World Trade Organization ( WTO) on February 12, 2019. At the same time, the European Commission also issued the Implementing Regulation of the EU Commission 2020/17 and EU 2020/18 on January 13, 2020, which provides no extension for the use of the active ingredients chlorpyrifos and chlorpyrifos- methyl.

Recently, through the meeting of the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Food (SCOPAFF) held from 17-8 February 2020, the EU Commission discussed and approved. through the draft Regulation on the reduction of maximum residue levels (MRL) for chlorpyrifos and chlorpyrifos-methyl to detection levels lower than 0.01 mg / kg. The draft Commission Regulation will then be forwarded to the EU Parliament, which will officially announce the adopted regulation and is scheduled for October 10, 2020 and the new MRLs will come into force three. month later.

The draft regulation will not exempt goods that have been manufactured or imported into the EU. Therefore, the new MRL is applied to all products from the effective date. To meet the proposed regulations, stakeholders in the agricultural / food industry must begin to implement new strategies; farmers need to apply new farming methods; trade flows start moving goods out of the EU or are at risk of being destroyed; It is likely that the supply of agricultural products for the EU market will be in short supply in the near future.
