Uganda's coffee exports in the 2019-2020 crop are expected to be about 16% higher than the previous period, thanks to favorable weather and expanded planted area.

James Kizito Mayanja, market information manager at the State Coffee Development Agency (UCDA), said Uganda's export volume of coffee in the 2019-2020 crop could reach 5.1 million 60 kg bags, up from 4.4 million bags in the previous crop.

Coffee has long been Uganda's largest export commodity but has now been surpassed by gold as its export value exceeded US $ 1 billion as of June this year.

Uganda is also the largest coffee exporter in Africa, followed by Ethiopia. The country mainly grows robusta coffee.

“Last year, we had a good crop and expected higher yields this year because of the favorable weather,” Mayanja said in an interview with Reuters.

“In addition, the planting program begins to work because most of the planted trees are growing.”
