The eye-catching green pepper gardens, aromatic pepper warehouses, rich young owners, confident and endless stories about the rising price of pepper every day … are the things that I feel most clearly. when arriving in Chu Se district, Gia Lai province.
“Baby pepper”

The rainy season of the Central Highlands this year is late, the early days of July but still sunny, blue sky high. Following Mr. Hoang Phuoc Binh – Vice Chairman of Chu Se Pepper Association to Ia Blang commune (Chu Se district) – the first commune to plant commodity pepper – I have the opportunity to witness and hear many stories about plant has helped “change” the people here.
Having spent more than 20 years as vice president and then chairman of Ia Blang commune, in the story, Mr. Binh could not hide his sadness when he told about the first days of his career here: “At that time (in 1977), this place was still deserted, sad, sick and hungry …, in 1986, I and my brothers and sisters invited each other to Loc Ninh (Binh Phuoc) to learn from the experience and bring the first pepper trees to try. It was a big surprise when the peppercorn quickly “took green roots” and the first harvest yielded quite high … The joy was multiplied when the output for favorable products. “Victory prevailed”, we invited each other to search for reclaimed land and expand pepper gardens. Until now … ”.
The pepper gardens stretching, with gardens up to a few thousand pillars have partly proved Mr. Binh's words. Pepper has really found its right land when in this land, the pepper trees produce the highest yield in the country, than other pepper growing areas such as Vinh Linh (Quang Tri), Loc Ninh (Binh Phuoc), Phu Quoc (Kien Giang) and Chau Duc (Ba Ria – Vung Tau). Particularly, the quality, aroma and typical spicy concentration, physical and chemical indicators have reached well … helped Chu Se pepper to conquer even fastidious markets like Europe and America; bringing the number of countries where Chu Se pepper is present to 79 countries, bypassing countries with long-standing pepper farming such as India, Indonesia, Malaysia …
Recognizing the enormous role of pepper in Chu Se, since 2004, the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Trade approved the inclusion of Chu Se pepper in the national key trade promotion program. After 4 years of implementation, on December 28, 2007, the trademark “Chu Se Pepper” has been officially announced – becoming the first pepper brand in Vietnam, contributing to bringing Vietnamese consumer goods. Nam to a new position.
On August 27, 2009, Chu Se district was split into 2 districts Chu Se and Chu Puh. Accordingly, the Party Committee of the government and people of ethnic groups in the two districts agreed that the community would be responsible, together take care of and develop sustainably for Chu Se Pepper to become a strong brand.
With over 4,000 ha (accounting for 6% of the country's area), but with an output of 15,000 to 20,000 tons / year (accounting for 17%) of the country's pepper output, Chu Se pepper has contributed significantly to bringing Vietnam Nam has become the world leader in pepper export. And also from the pepper tree, not only Kinh people, but also Jrai and Bahnar people in Chu Se and Chu Puh escaped from poverty, many households “changed their lives”, became billionaires … The face of Chu Se village , Chu Pưh is also from here, more spacious, more affluent.
Become a big boss thanks to pepper
My wish to visit some of the billionaires – those who earn a billion dong a year from growing pepper – was immediately responded by Mr. Binh, because according to him, with 10,000 households directly producing pepper, the number of people earning income. Enter like that number up to several dozen. Then, just passing me on a motorbike running smoothly on a smooth cemented inter-commune road, Mr. Binh chatted happily: The journalist counted, like Mr. Nguyen Van Kha's house, Hoa An village, Nhon Hoa town. , Chu Pưh district, with a stable pepper production of 40 tons / year, multiplied by the current price of pepper is now 80,000 VND / kg … then the income is naturally in billions already. And the houses of Mr. Le Phuoc Tuan, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son, Mr. Vo Ngoc Hoanh, the annual output is also approximately 20 tons … not to mention they also planted more coffee, stars su … The drive to visit the pepper garden is no longer It's rare here.
Attempts to bring Chu Se Pepper to the world.
And I have gone from surprise to surprise when I stepped into the spacious houses, luxurious amenities of the bosses, which started from pepper. Mr. Nguyen Van Luyen (Village 6, Ia Blang Commune) is an example. Started planting pepper in 1991 with the first 200 posts, up to now, Mr. Luyen has over 10,000 posts, in a rainy season, the yield can reach over 50 tons. In severe weather like 2009, Mr. Luyen's pepper output also reached 37 tons. Building upstairs houses, buying cars, for children to study … Mr. Luyen and his wife emerged as a typical example of overcoming difficulties.
Starting to plant pepper later than Mr. Luyen's house, but now Mr. Tran Van Hung, village 6, Ia Blang commune also has 6,000 pepper posts. Young, there are up to 4 children, but thanks to pepper, Mr. Hung has also built a big house, with a large large asphalt drying yard. This year, Mr. Hung's family collected 18 tons. “I have left, not sold any ton, wait and see if the price increases” – opened the unspent warehouse with high quality, pungent smell … Mr. Hung said.
Nhan said about the price tag, Binh said: “The price of raw material now has reached over VND 70,000 / kg, but due to good quality and high density, people in Chu Se nowadays, Chư Pưh has sold at home price of over 80,000 VND / kg – 30,000 VND higher than the time of harvest. There are many reasons for the price of pepper to rise, but the main reason is due to inclement weather, many pepper areas have reduced output by 35% … ”
Turning around the price of pepper is an unfinished story of crying. Many pepper growers do not have large capital, pepper harvest is in a hurry to sell immediately to pay for labor, feces, varieties … now the price of pepper nearly doubled, like the salt in the gut. But “hard-headed” does not sell at the price of 70,000 VND / kg, finally, the price drops, it has to be sold at 40,000 VND / kg as in the case of the Hero of pepper in 2008 is not uncommon … a few big bosses, who have some experience in predicting the market, are on the top of the table, watching the stockpile full of them, listening to the increasing prices day by day, “opening the flag in the belly”.
Efforts for “unique pepper brand in Vietnam”
Like “shuttle”, in this morning, sometimes in another commune, Mr. Hoang Phuoc Binh is like the leader of the Chu Se pepper area. Chu Se Pepper Association was officially established in September 2008, but Mr. Binh has been rolling with peers and pepper trees since the first days of commodity pepper taking root on Chu Se land. Mr. Binh shared: “Pepper growers are nearly 50% ethnic minority. From being self-sufficient, now shifting to intensive farming, growing cash crops is a problem ”. Can not say no, but just to handle the situation, sometimes just to handle the fact that people have not heard, there must be reality to prove … Even the output of pepper is favorable, many people get rich from pepper also causing many people to hurry, expand the area, while not mastering the knowledge of planting and tending pepper. Not to mention in recent years, the increasingly severe weather, “fast death” and “slow death” of pepper are still considered as “incurable” diseases, many people just because of lack of knowledge, they have to shed tears. look at the disease and die, while the cost for a new planting pillar at the present time is up to 200,000 VND …
The above fact has prompted the Chu Se Pepper Pepper Board of Directors to be more determined in working with nearly 1,500 members to build, manage and develop the Chu Se Pepper brand, to well carry out “linking 4 houses. ”, Invest in technology transfer in production, processing and consumption of products, so that pepper plants not only produce high yields and good quality, but also growers avoid risks and have the highest income.
The seminars attracted a lot of people to participate, the phone numbers 0593.768687 / 768688/768689 – specializing in announcing pepper prices, weather, recommendations on how to take care of pepper … of Chu Se Pepper Pepper Association through “expensive goods”, has partly proved the dynamism and effectiveness of the association. And as Mr. Binh said, there are still many things that the association is working with businesses, scientists to conduct … to make Chu Se Pepper Brand – the unique brand of Vietnamese pepper in the period. Current points – will be more known in the world market. Or as Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tien – Director of Department of Science and Technology Gia Lai determined: “Branding of Chu Se pepper pepper brand has only the starting point but no ending point” …
Looking at the escaped footsteps of Mr. Binh among the pepper gardens, listening to him passionately explained to the people; meet pepper growers, including those who have decided to “abandon the street to the forest” – moving completely from Hai Phong to Chu Se to grow pepper like Mr. Dong Quoc Bao … just to see, pepper cultivation is really attractive and will Will definitely be further developed in the future.
