The Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA) has organized two surveys in six key growing provinces of our country (Dong Nai, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Binh Phuoc, Dak Nong, Dak Lak, and Gia Lai) to assess An overview of the production and consumption situation of pepper crop in 2013 helps the production and business activities of farmers and enterprises have a clearer and more effective basis.
Phase I from 17-18 January 2013.
The survey team in Dong Nai and Ba Ria Vung Tau provinces, consisting of 25 members.
Participating in the survey coordination were the district's specialized officials, the heads of villages (hamlets), the president of the Farmers' Association, and the president of the local pepper production club.
In Dong Nai: Survey 4 pepper farming households in Gia Lao Hamlet, Suoi Cao and Tho Loc Villages, Xuan Tho Commune in Xuan Loc District.
In Ba Ria – Vung Tau: Survey of 4 pepper growing households in Hiep Thanh and Tan Thanh hamlets, Quang Thanh commune of Chau Duc district.
1. Current situation of pepper production in 2 provinces:
– Farmers who intensively cultivate pepper gardens towards sustainable organic practices (fertilizing manure, do not abuse chemical fertilizers and use less pesticides, use live poles, drip irrigation …) are quite popular, so the number of gardens trees dying from pests and diseases have decreased.
– Entering the harvest period, people spread the net with soil, use original canvas so the pepper does not drop, leak or get dirty soil when harvesting.
– By the time the delegation came to the survey, the harvest progress was about 30-40% of the area (compared to the same period in 2012 one month earlier, because this year is profitable).
– In June 2012 is the period when pepper plants need to limit watering to differentiate flower sprouts, then they have storm No. 1. Because heavy rain causes pepper trees to sprout with many leaves, only a few flower buds, productivity decreases. widespread.
– Number of new planted areas 3-4 years ago, so far has been harvested. Due to new pepper gardens, good intensive cultivation should yield high yields. The old pepper area after many years of exploitation, productivity decreased.
– Due to natural conditions (soil, water) as well as capacity, intensive farming levels among different households should lead to uneven pepper productivity.
– It is estimated that the yield in each province will decrease by about 20% compared to the 2012 crop.
2. Consumption situation and price:
Many households harvested to where to sell, selling both pepper just exposed to the sun, the price of 50,000-55,000 VND / kg (dried black pepper price 125,000-130,000 VND / kg), with this price, she sold a lot. This is different from the same period in 2012, because the price as above is quite high (up 10,000 VND / kg compared to the same period in 2012), so people earn high interest. On the other hand, due to psychological factors from the 2012 crop, people stockpiled at the beginning of the season and sold at the end of the season ineffectively due to falling prices.
Phase II from February 27 to March 1, 2013.
The mission surveyed in three provinces of Binh Phuoc, Dak Nong, Dak Lak, and Gia Lai including 17 members.
At Binh Phuoc: The delegation visited many pepper gardens and surveyed 2 pepper growing households in Hamlet 4, Loc An commune, Loc Ninh district.
– The pepper gardens have been exploited for more than 10 years, the pepper trees are degraded, the yield decreases by 20- 25% compared to the 2012 crop.
– Young pepper gardens, which have been harvested for 2-3 years, are intensively cultivated, still yielding fairly and stably compared to 2012 crops.
– The whole region harvested about 70% of the area (about 30% in the same period in 2012). Average productivity of the whole region is estimated to decrease by 20-25% compared to 2012 crop.
Forecasted output will decrease by 20% compared to 2012. At the moment, black pepper 500g / l at the agent: VND 120,000 / kg, down VND 5,000 / kg over the same period of 2012.
In Dak Nong: The delegation observed and visited a large-area pepper growing area and surveyed that a household with 20 hectares was harvested in village 2, NamNjang commune, Dak Song district:
– The newly planted area in the last 2-3 years has increased sharply due to the high price of pepper and the good availability of land.
– Most pepper gardens have been exploited for business after 7-8 years, weather, pests and diseases and intensive farming capacity of many households are still weak, so pepper gardens are degraded, productivity decreases 20-25% compared to 2012. .
– Many nursery gardens, new harvest 1-2 years, yield fairly and stable compared to 2012.
– The whole region harvested about 70% of the area (25% in the same period in 2012). The overall average yield is expected to decrease by 25%.
Output is estimated to decrease by 20% compared to 2012. Survey of a buying agent: Most farmers sell pepper right after harvesting. Sometimes agents purchase over 100 tons / day. Price at the time of black pepper 500g / l: 120,000 VND / kg, down 5,000 VND / kg over the same period in 2012
In Dak Lak: The delegation visited many pepper gardens and surveyed 3 pepper growing households with a large area of 2-3 ha / household in the key pepper growing area in 2B village Ea H’Leo commune Ea H’Leo district.
– Here, most young pepper gardens have just been harvested for 2-3 years and have good intensive farming techniques.
– 50% of the area has been harvested (25% in the same period in 2012)
– The average yield is expected to decrease by 20%.
Production is estimated to decrease by 20% compared to 2012. The price at the moment, black pepper 500g / l at the agent: VND 120,000 / kg, down VND 5,000 / kg over the same period in 2012.
* In ChuPu district – Gia Lai province: key growing areas of the province
The delegation visited a large pepper growing area and surveyed pepper growing households with an area of over 3 hectares, with a seniority of over 20 years in pepper farming in Japang commune:
– This region is specialized in intensive cultivation and long-term pepper cultivation. Most of the pepper gardens which have been harvested after 10 years are now old, degraded and deeply reduced in productivity. Many pepper areas died due to the disease died quickly, died slowly in the past 2 years.
– 50% of the area has been harvested (25% in the same period in 2012).
– Forecast an average yield reduction of 25-30%
Production decreased by 25% compared to 2012. Survey of pepper buying agent in Nhon Hoa town: Black pepper price of 500g / l: 119,200 VND / kg, down 5,000 VND / kg over the same period in 2012.
In Chu Se district – Gia Lai province, key growing areas of the province
The delegation made extensive visits to pepper growing areas and surveyed 3 typical pepper growing households, in Kong H’Toc commune:
– Intensive and intensive pepper gardens have been harvested after 10 years. Nowadays, they are old and degraded, their productivity is much reduced. Many pepper areas died due to the disease died quickly, died slowly.
– 50% of the area has been harvested (25% in the same period in 2012).
– The average yield of the whole district is expected to decrease by 25-30%.
Production is estimated to decrease by 25% compared to 2012. Black pepper price is 500g / l at the agent: 119,000 VND / kg, down 5,000 VND / kg over the same period in 2012.
General assessment through 2 surveys:
1. Regarding production status:
– The newly planted area increases sharply, especially in the Central Highlands provinces, where there is still a lot of land fund.
– May 6/2012, right at the time of water pressure to digest the flower sprouts, met the storm No. 1, after heavy rains lasted for days, so the tree has buds, leaves, little flower buds; This is the main cause of reduced pepper productivity in most provinces.
– Due to prolonged heavy rainfall, causing inundation, pepper root rot, causing quick death. Slow death pepper still exists in many places.
– The majority of pepper gardens have been exploited for over 10 years, now the pepper trees are old and degraded, and people are worried that they are less interested in tending and reducing intensive farming, leading to a gradual reduction in productivity.
– This year's crop harvest 1 month earlier than in 2012, due to leap year.
– Pepper consumption in 2013 is estimated to decrease by 20% nationwide.
– Production is estimated at 88,000 – 90,000 tons, down about 20% compared to 2012.
2. Regarding purchase, sale and price:
– The southeastern provinces harvested before Tet, due to the need for Tet holiday, pepper costs over 120,000 – VND / kg, up 10,000 VND / kg over the same period in 2012, and due to psychological factors for years 2012 reserve at the beginning of the season, the sale at the end of the season is not effective, so people sell strongly, where to sell it.
– After Tet holiday, the provinces in the Central Highlands are at a strange time, the price of pepper is reduced by VND 5,000-10,000 / kg, the production households have a large area, achieve a large volume, have conditions to store, people sell in moderation.
Epilogue:
– Organizing the Delegation to visit and survey key planting areas to make forecasts is an annual activity of VPA, which is supported by participating members and supported by the local management agencies. , cooperating to help and be responded, welcomed and exchanged openly by farmers. On this occasion, businesses have the opportunity to exchange information directly with peers, with pepper collection centers at the grassroots, to help with the forecast of crops, to grasp the situation of circulation and trading. price, on that basis each enterprise has a business-oriented, processing and export plan to increase economic efficiency and limit risks.
– The survey team gave a forecast of the pepper crop output in 2013 based on a combination of many sources and from the actual survey. However, the above figures are only an initial estimate because the pepper harvest has not ended, the situation of trade, domestic and export prices is still complicated, VPA will continue to update to have the more accurate data.
– VPA highly appreciates the sense of responsibility of the participants in the survey team. Ask members in the units to participate more in the next survey.
