Pepper is not “small”, because pepper exports are aiming to reach the $ 1 billion mark this year and help some localities reduce poverty.
From the database of the General Statistics Office, it is possible to identify the turnover and quantity of pepper exported over a number of years.
Accordingly, pepper export turnover in 2012 was more than 74 times higher than in 1986, an average increase of 18.2% per year. That is a relatively high growth rate for an agricultural product, originally primarily considered “home garden”, taking advantage of bare land, few people think of exporting to the world market; This item also depends on nature. Moreover, Vietnam's pepper exports in 2012 surpassed that of India – the country that holds the record for many years – topped the world!
This growth rate and scale are quite significant, as pepper exports are mainly achieved in provinces such as Binh Phuoc, Dak Lak, Quang Tri, Gia Lai and Ba Ria-Vung Tau (mainly in Ba Ria), Binh Thuan, Tay Ninh, Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Phu Yen, Nghe An – are localities with either land advantage, experience in planting, tending, or high demand in the restructuring of plants, escaping from poverty, …
Export turnover of pepper in 9 months of 2013 reached a fairly large scale, higher than the export of the whole 2011 (732.2 million USD) and nearly equal to the level of the whole 2012. The growth rate compared to the same period last year reaching 18%, although lower than the growth rate of 2011, but already more than 2 times the growth rate of 2012; much higher than the growth rate of exports of agriculture, forestry and fishery (0.5%), higher than the general growth rate of the country's total export turnover (15.7%).
With the export scale of 9 months, if the average of 1 month in the last 3 months of the year is equal to the average of 1 month in 9 months of 2013, it is expected that in 2013, the export turnover of pepper will reach 1 billion USD. If the forecast is correct, then pepper export turnover in 2013 will reach USD 1 billion for the first time, adding members to the “club” for export items with a turnover of USD 1 billion or more ( in 2012 there were 23 members).
There are many reasons for pepper export to achieve the above positive results.
There are important causes of production. The cultivated area of pepper has expanded rapidly over the years. If in 1986, the new pepper area reached 3,900 ha, in 1995 reached 7,000 ha, in 2000 reached 27,900 ha, in 2005 it reached 49,100 ha, in 2010 reached 51,300 ha, in 2012 reached 58,900 ha. In 2012, compared with 1986, the cultivated area of pepper was 15.1 times higher, an average annual increase of over 11%. It is a very high growth rate for an agricultural crop, mainly due to the efficiency of pepper.
The area for pepper production has also increased continuously at a high rate: If in 1995 there were 5,200 ha, in 2000 it was 44,300 ha, in 2012 it is estimated to be 49,000 ha, in 2012 compared to 1995, the area for the output of pepper is 9.4 times higher, an average of 14.1% per year – higher than the growth rate of planted area (8.4 times and an increase of 13.3% / year) . The harvested output of pepper in 2012 reached 113,000 tons, 31.4 times higher than that in 1986, an average increase of 14.2% per year, higher than the growth rate of cultivated area, area of product. .
This shows that the export results of pepper have attracted people, not only actively expanding the area, but also actively taking good care of the pepper gardens to have a higher yield.
Along with the factor of area, the harvest is the amount of export pepper increasing over the years.
Accordingly, in 2012 compared to 1986, the export volume of pepper was 37.7 times higher, an average of 15% increase per year. Thus, in 2012 compared with 1986 exports were 77 times higher, while exports were 37.7 times higher. This proves that the export price in 2012 was nearly 1.9 times higher than in 1986. In other words, the export turnover of pepper increased, not only because of the increase in export volume, but also because of the increase in export price.
Export price, if in 1986 only reached 3,322.6 USD / ton, then in 2000 reached 4,260 USD / ton, in 2012 reached 6,794.5 USD / ton. In the first 9 months of 2013, although the price has decreased compared to the same period last year (down 6.7%), the price is still quite high (6,619 USD / ton, twice as high as 1986 and 1.6 times higher than in 2000). .
Vietnam's pepper has been present in many countries and territories around the world, including 23 markets reaching over 1,000 tons (United States, Germany, United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, Singapore, Egypt, India, Spain, England, Russia, Pakistan, Korea, Philippines, Ukraine, Poland, France, Turkey, Japan, Italy, South Africa, Australia, Canada, Thailand). Notably, three markets reached over 10,000 tons: the United States 16,930 tons, Germany 10,760 tons, the United Arab Emirates 10,310 tons. Those are also the largest markets in 9 months of 2013.
In order to boost the export of pepper, a long-term plan is needed for the sustainable development of pepper plants; step up processing to increase export value and continue to expand markets, including big markets. Pepper will no longer “small pepper” if this year's export turnover of this item will surpass the $ 1 billion mark.
