One of the main reasons, according to VPA, is that Vietnamese farmers and businesses have been actively controlling the price market. “Pepper farmers are no longer as panicked as they used to be, sometimes even foreign customers” stick to it “for a whole month, but the domestic pepper source has not wavered or even increased prices.” Mr. Nam said.

Statistics in the past 5 years, the price of pepper increased each year: in 2009 was 39,000 VND / kg, in 2010 was 62,000 VND / kg, in 2011-2013 reached from 125,000 to 140,000 VND / kg, the peak sometimes reached up to VND 160,000 / kg. Vietnam pepper is accounting for more than 50% of the global pepper market. Many pepper growing areas were richer, forming a village town not inferior to urban areas, farmers used the internet to track prices and market developments.

The high price of pepper has encouraged farmers to expand their acreage, by 2013 the country was estimated at 60,000 hectares, exceeding 17% of the plan of 50,000 hectares by 2020 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. However, VPA warns that a rapidly increasing area on unsuitable land and limited scientific and technological application will lead to the risk of unsustainable production. On the other hand, the World Pepper Association recommends that from 2015 onwards the world pepper output may increase, so prices may fluctuate in a downward direction.

Therefore, VPA recommends that farmers limit their expansion, shift from quantity development to quality, apply organic production, and do not use pesticides to meet export requirements. password. Businesses also invest in producing value-added products because most of the pepper is currently exported raw and 70% have to go through intermediaries.
