(October 29) – Vietnam currently world leader in export pepper output, accounting for up to 50% of the world's pepper export output.
However, according to experts, in order to develop pepper sustainably, Vietnam needs to overcome the limitations of non-branded products, most of which are raw exports, low prices, poor food hygiene and safety and unregulated development. plan.
Exported to more than 80 countries and territories
According to a report of the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA) at the Sustainable Pepper Development Conference 2013, in the period of 2011-2013, the pepper industry continuously grew its exports (exports), from an output of 118,416 tons / year. 2011 increased to 125,000 tons in 2013, accounting for 50% of total export volume of pepper worldwide, turnover is estimated at 850 million USD. Vietnam pepper is currently exported to more than 80 countries and territories with the average price of 6,471 USD / ton, white pepper 8,911 USD / ton.
The country has 13 pepper processing plants of high quality standards, with a total capacity of over 60,000 tons per year, a variety of packaging types, meeting the needs of high-quality markets such as the US, Japan and Europe.
Vietnam's pepper industry currently plays a role in regulating circulation, stabilizing prices for the world, income and profits mainly belong to pepper growers, enterprises doing export business effectively.
“Forecasting in 2014, the production of pepper exports will continue to be stable in prices with an output of 130,000 tons and a turnover of US $ 900 million. From 2015 onwards, new challenges of supply and demand and prices may appear. In any case, Vietnam is still the leading pepper producer in the world if there is a unity in the supply chain from farmers to agents, suppliers and finally exporters, in which farmers spend sales volume and price, ”said Do Ha Nam – VPA President.
TS Do Trung Binh – Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences said that the worldwide import turnover of imports was estimated at US $ 3 billion in 2013, of which pepper accounted for 44% to become the leading spice. About quantity and value. Global pepper production is estimated to reach 315,000 tons this year, an increase of 5% compared to 2012, if including the domestic consumption of pepper-growing countries, the export capacity is much lower than the demand.
“Because of the 2.9 times higher productivity than Indonesia and 8.2 times higher than India, the production cost of Vietnamese pepper is lower than other countries. On the other hand, the quality of pepper is assessed to be not inferior to other exporting countries in terms of taste, color, oil content ”, PhD. Do Trung Binh said.
Towards sustainability
According to VPA, the factors that help Vietnam's pepper industry develop sustainably in the coming time are the ability to stabilize prices of farmers and develop pepper areas according to planning, towards clean products. Accordingly, the pepper area has reached approximately 60,000 hectares, exceeding the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development's 50,000 hectares plan, so VPA advised farmers to limit the expansion of areas where natural conditions are not suitable. Shifting from the development of quantity to quality, improving the market share of exporting white pepper and pepper powder in order to increase the value of products and produce in accordance with the sustainable organic trend GAP process.
At the same time, pepper exporting enterprises perform well updating information on prices and trade, making general analysis of supply and demand forecasts, market prices, branding, geographical origin and soon putting into practice. Currently, production and export create strong competition.
“In the past 6 years, Vietnamese pepper growers have been awake, have not fallen into the trap of disturbing information about supply and demand, prices, and prices kept simultaneously selling goods, actively choosing the appropriate time to sell, creating right to determine the selling price, limiting the domination of speculators. This is a successful lesson of pepper industry in which farmers and businesses have agreed and persevere in implementation ”, Mr. Do Ha Nam said.
From the perspective of enterprises, Mr. Le Anh Tuan – Director of Vietnam Inspection and Certification Joint Stock Company said that another key issue is that the pepper industry needs to ensure food hygiene and safety through restricting to Lowest plant protection drug. The reason is that in 2013, VPA and pepper exporting enterprises had to deal with a lot of bad information for Vietnam pepper about pesticide residue. Therefore, the management agencies and the VPA should coordinate to organize a comprehensive program of assessment of pesticide use and residues on Vietnamese pepper samples. This will help timely improve and strengthen the reputation of Vietnamese pepper.
