Spot prices of pepper continued to stabilize despite buying power from around the country, according to the news Business Line.
Supplies continue to rise from Karnataka, but at slightly higher prices as demand increases sharply across the country. In addition, industrial and export buyers are also pushing for consolidation.
Traders seeking supply in the High Mountains of Kerala state that farmers are expecting prices to rise above Rs 700 a kg as they sold late last year. While traders from Tamil Nadu district pay high density of pepper at 585 – 590 Rs / kg at the doorstep in cash and move by themselves, they are not ready to sell.
Pepper movement from the High Mountains continues but very little.
Preliminary processed pepper with a weight of 500 Gr is traded at Rs 565 / kg.
On the futures market, 62 tonnes of pepper were transferred, of which 48 tonnes were from Karnataka state and the rest were pre-processed pepper.
Spot prices remained unchanged at Rs 55,500 / quintal (US $ 8,898 / ton) for pint and 58,500 Rs / quintal (US $ 9,379 / ton) for semi-processed pepper.
Meanwhile, active contracts on the IPSTA Spices Association Floor increased slightly. Specifically, the contracts in May and June increased by Rs 493 / quintals to Rs 59,500 / quintal and Rs 59,497 / quintal respectively (equivalent to USD 9,539 / ton and 9,538 USD / ton).
Export price of Indian pepper is now at 9,800 USD / ton (c & f) for Europe and 10,100 USD / ton (c & f) for goods to the US, up 150 USD / ton from the previous week.
Indian pepper prices have returned to compete in the international market compared to prices originating from Vietnam.
