The delegation of 17 members from 10 enterprises surveyed a number of pepper growing households in Trang Bom, Cam My, Dong Nai and Chau Duc, Xuyen Moc and Ba Ria – Vung Tau districts, with largest pepper cultivation area of ​​the 2 provinces.

Preliminary results show

– Most of the households will harvest about 2-3 weeks after the lunar new year (ie from February 20 of the solar calendar) due to the early Tet holiday so the harvest is earlier than the previous year.

– The yield of these areas is similar to that of 2016 though the pest situation is more positive. The reason for this large area is that the old pepper garden over 15 years old has less yield than the previous year, except for a few gardens very carefully cared for by the owner, so the yield is similar to the previous crop. The increase in output is therefore mainly due to the fact that a new pepper growing area from 2012-2013 began to harvest to compensate for the lost output of the old pepper gardens;

– Weather is still the biggest factor affecting pepper production in this season. In Dong Nai, heavy rains in June and July have made some old pepper gardens, the resistance is poor and there is much loss, the chains have no left;

– Besides, pests and diseases, though not as big as the 2015 crop, were smoldering in waves, especially slow death (mainly due to nematodes and some fungi), farmers still had to use pesticides. However, 100% of the farmers interviewed said that they stopped using all pesticides since November because there was no significant pest or disease on pepper in December.

– The trend of forming cooperative groups or having links with pepper growing enterprises towards organic sustainability (fertilizing cow, goat, etc.) is developing widely in Lam San, Chau Duc and Xuyen Moc according to the figure. Farmers in the field of clean pepper are supported with 50% of the cost of testing samples, ensuring the output and rewarding an additional 5,000 VND / kg if the samples are not contaminated with Metaxyl and Carbedazim. Test results are kept by the households and they can be sold to anyone at any time. With this mechanism, many farmers here are turning to sustainable organic farming.

– However, due to seeking additional income, some farmers still use a lot of inorganic fertilizers, mostly N, P, and K fertilizer purchased by themselves. Also use more fertilizers to stimulate fruit.

– Most of the interviewed households showed that they still had pepper, averagely a few tons / household due to the annual sentiment that November – December was the time when pepper prices often increased compared to the beginning of the season. However, at present, pepper price is going down, only about 139,000 VND / kg of black pepper (at the beginning of price), so many farmers still keep hoarding and not selling. Farmers still mainly buy and sell via traders, so they are quite dependent (price, density measuring tools, etc.) on traders and no enterprises have buying stations in Cam My, Long Khanh and Chau Duc areas. , Xuyen Moc.
