In 2016, Vietnam's pepper industry has had a hard year due to high price fluctuations, but pepper traders, processors and farmers have overcome many obstacles to be successful. Impressive with the export achievement reaching the highest record ever in both volume (179,233 tons of pepper) and value (export turnover reached 1 billion USD 439.87 million).
However, entering the new year 2017, with world information about the global situation of pepper production and trade in 2017, the forecast of Vietnam's pepper export situation in 2017 will be a very hard year. It can even be said that it will be harder than 2016 and previous years.
Quality of exported pepper will be the most important factor affecting Vietnam's pepper trade this year. And, managing the quality of raw pepper from production areas is also the most difficult thing that the pepper industry must overcome to maintain export turnover.
Demand for this spice in the world market has increased, but most of the world market do not accept the purchase of pepper that does not meet quality requirements, the most concentrated is the problem of pesticide residues.
This problem is not new, but in 2017 it will be focused more scrutinized many times, especially in markets where Vietnamese pepper is taking good market share is the US and Europe. For example, the problem of Metalaxyl chemical residues on pepper imported into the EU. Many years ago the maximum allowed amount (MRLs) of this chemical was 0.1ppm, but in 2017 it may not be anymore, the European Commission EC is proposing to apply the allowed MRLs of only 0.05ppm. .
According to the official information from the European Spices Association (ESA), in the letter to VPA and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development at the end of January 2017, it said that in 2016, ESA analyzed 799 samples of black pepper imported into the EU in 2016. 17% of the samples had the maximum permitted residue level of less than 0.05ppm. If the situation of pepper production is still the same as in 2016, it means that in 2017, there will be more than 80% of Vietnam's pepper will have difficulty to enter the European market, the capital market consumes approximately 40,000 tons. , accounting for 23% of Vietnam's total export of pepper annually.
For the US market, where over the past few years there have been over 40,000 tons of pepper imported from Vietnam, accounting for 24% of Vietnam's total export, equivalent to Europe, is also preparing to issue a series of new regulations. on quality requirements of imported agricultural products, including pepper.
Quality is a vital issue of Vietnam's pepper industry in the future, but how to manage quality in pepper production areas to meet export market requirements is still a question. The psychology of seeking high productivity to earn high income at all costs of most pepper farmers in our country has caused the excessive use of fertilizers, pushing pepper into a state of unbalanced and susceptible growth. pests and then widespread use of pesticides to “save” their billions of dollars is a sad reality. Only when the majority of pepper farmers realize the seriousness of that poorly understood cultivation problem, change their behavior, cultivate according to GAP will the pepper quality be improved and exported accordingly. can be sustainable.
