Due to the “overheating” development in recent years, the pepper industry is facing great risks, which can disrupt the whole industry. Therefore, it is time to restructure the pepper industry in a sustainable manner.
That is the main content at the Conference “Promoting the development of sustainable pepper production” Organized by MARD on January 25 in Ho Chi Minh City. Ho Chi Minh.
Supply and demand across the world
According to Le Van Duc, Deputy Director of the Department of Crop Production, from 2010 to the present, our pepper area has increased very fast. In 2010, the whole country planted only 51.5 thousand hectares, in 2014 was 85,591 thousand hectares. By the end of 2017, it was 152,668ha, an increase of 196.3% compared to 2010, an increase of 22.5% compared to 2016 and exceeded 100 thousand hectares.
The increase in Vietnam's pepper area has contributed significantly to the increase in the world pepper area. In 2010, the world planted 443,881ha. By 2015, there will be 518,823 ha, an increase of approximately 75 thousand ha compared to 2010, focusing mainly in Vietnam.
The rapidly increasing pepper area in Vietnam and some other countries has led to a sharp increase in global production. Global pepper production in 2016 reached 434,000 tons, up to 2017 to 510,000 tons. According to Nedspice research, supply is beginning to exceed demand and there is a significant increase in inventories in pepper producing countries around the world. In the period of 2012 – 2017, the increase in production is 5.5% while the increase in demand is only 2.4% / year. Forecasting in the period from 2017 to 2030, the potential supply will reach the lowest of 420,000 tons and the highest is 670,000 tons.
According to the Vietnam Pepper Association, particularly in 2018, although the productivity of some major producing countries, including Vietnam, may decrease, but due to the increase in acreage for harvesting, the total supply Global demand will still be higher than 2017 and higher than demand. This makes world prices tend not to increase, profits from pepper production with farmers are not as previous years. Exporting Vietnamese pepper will be difficult due to technical barriers from importing countries such as the US, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands …
Due to oversupply, world pepper prices in general and pepper prices in Vietnam have continuously fallen sharply in recent years. At the moment, pepper price in Vietnam is just over 60,000 dong / kg, close to the average production price of the whole country of over 49,000 dong / kg. The development too “hot” of pepper area is the main cause of major inadequacies for the whole industry such as increasing disease situation, alarming of pesticide residues due to excessive intensification …
Go right into sustainable development
According to Minister Nguyen Xuan Cuong, the development “flash” In the past few years, the pepper industry has posed major problems that, if not promptly removed, will not only cause pepper to lag behind, but also threaten to disrupt the whole industry.
First of all, the area of pepper increases so fast that it cannot be controlled. Scientific and technological research and scientific and technical transfer have not yet met the development needs of pepper. Only a commodity with export value of more than 1 billion USD, so far, no pepper variety has been recognized as unacceptable. Or the absence of a standard farming process is also one of the important causes leading to the disease situation in many pepper growing areas …
Therefore, the Minister said that from now on, with pepper trees, do not follow the path “Exam” productivity, output, but quality.
Mr. Phan Minh Thong, General Director of Phuc Sinh Joint Stock Company gave specific evidence on the advantages of pepper produced in the quality direction. Specifically, since 2012, Phuc Sinh has cooperated with many farmers in Buon Ma Thuot, implementing a project of growing pepper under Rain Forest standards. By 2014, this certification. As a result, Phuc Sinh exports 20,000-25,000 tons of pepper each year, 40% of which goes to the EU, which places very high requirements on food safety for imported pepper. According to Ms. Le Thi Anh Tuyet, Deputy Director of Binh Phuoc Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Binh Phuoc pepper when inspected, only about 50% of food safety standards to export to the EU. But when Nedspice Company and Binh Phuoc Agricultural Extension Center collaborated with farmers to implement a sustainable development project on 1,000 hectares of pepper, the amount of pepper harvested in this area, through inspection, up to 82% reached the target. Export standard to EU.
Minister Nguyen Xuan Cuong: To focus on restructuring the pepper industry immediately. First of all, the area of pepper is not only increased but also decreased.
Accordingly, focus on reducing in areas that are not suitable for pepper, not planting new areas of dead pepper. Local authorities need to step up the propaganda and advocacy for farmers to understand that world pepper production has exceeded demand, pepper is a spice so usage is limited …, so it should not be developed. Massive area, output.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development must focus on the work of pepper varieties, immediately select good varieties to recognize them. At the same time, find out the standard farming processes for each ecological sub-region.
Regarding production, it is necessary to promote models of chain link. This is an indispensable path to sustainable development of the pepper industry. If not affiliated, businesses will not be able to exist. Vietnam Pepper Association must enhance its role for the development of Vietnam pepper and the position of Vietnam pepper in the world market.
