The price of pepper increased sharply due to the significant decline in pepper area for nearly a decade when farmers switched to other crops such as coffee and durian. At the same time, consumption demand increased in European and American markets.

According to the Vietnam Pepper Association, the amount of exported pepper to the US in January 2025 increased by more than 20% compared to the same period last year. In addition, harsh weather and epidemics on pepper also affect production, making the supply continue to be narrowed.

According to experts, although the increase in pepper prices gives Gia Lai farmers the opportunity to improve their income, they should not expand the massive area but need to focus on improving product quality. The pepper market is cyclical, the current high price is an opportunity but also has the potential risk if the production is not sustainable. Farmers need to apply organic cultivation, disease control and links with businesses to ensure stable output.

The price of pepper increases helps farmers have more profits and regain confidence with agricultural products that were once compared to the “black gold” of the Central Highlands. In order to stabilize the pepper tree, Gia Lai will maintain an area of ​​8,500-10,000 ha, build concentrated production areas, associated with processing and export.

At the same time, the province will promote the application of advanced farming techniques, increase the area of ​​intercropping to minimize disease. By 2030, about 60% of the pepper area achieved GAP certification and over 70% of the area with planting areas, traceability of products.
