Durian exports to China have increased to a record, but are still far behind Cambodia

In September, durian exports reached 673 million USD, up 51% over the same period last year. Calculated by month, this is a record number for the durian industry ever.

Detailed data from the General Department of Customs shows: In the first 9 months of 2024, Vietnam’s durian exports reached a record turnover of 2.8 billion USD, up 63% over the same period last year and exceeding the turnover of for the whole year 2023 nearly 600 million USD.

The Chinese market alone imported up to 2.6 billion USD, up 65% over the same period last year. Notably, in September alone, durian exports to China reached 630 million USD, an increase of 51% compared to September 2023.

But in terms of growth rate over the past 9 months, China still lags behind the country in second place, Thailand, with 85%, reaching a value of 133 million USD. Notably, the strongest growth was in Cambodia, nearly 16 times with a value of nearly 3 million USD. Similarly, Papua New Guinea increased by 265% with a value of over 20 million USD. This is also Vietnam’s 4th largest durian importer. Besides, Japan also grew by 80% and reached a value of nearly 4 million USD.

Among the 10 largest durian import markets of Vietnam, only the US decreased by 31% to 14 million USD and Canada decreased by nearly 19% to 4.5 million USD.

In 2023, September is also the month when durian exports reach the highest value and the second highest position is October. According to that cycle, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (VINAFRUIT) ) estimates: Durian exports in October could reach about 600 million USD and the turnover of durian this year could reach 3.7 – 3.8 billion USD. In terms of absolute numbers, it is an increase of about 1.5 billion USD compared to 2023.
