Domestic coffee prices continuously set new “records” and are about to approach 100,000 VND/kg. Currently, the average purchase price in the Central Highlands provinces is 98,600 VND/kg, the highest purchase price in Dak Nong province is 98,700 VND/kg.
Specifically, the price of coffee purchased in Gia Lai province and Kon Tum province is at 98,600 VND/kg; In Lam Dong province in districts such as Bao Loc, Di Linh, Lam Ha, coffee is purchased at a price of 98,100 VND/kg. In Dak Lak province; In Cu M’gar district, coffee is purchased at about 98,500 VND/kg, while in Ea H’leo district, Buon Ho town is purchased at the same rate of 98,600 VND/kg.
In the first quarter of 2024, Vietnam exported nearly 600,000 tons of coffee with a turnover of about 1.9 billion USD, an increase of only over 3% in quantity but an increase of over 54% in export turnover.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, coffee is the product with the second highest export turnover in the agricultural sector, second only to wood products and has surpassed seafood.
The reason is that coffee prices increased by 43.5% over the same period last year and reached an average of 3,181 USD/ton.
Export coffee prices have increased, but Vietnamese coffee has gradually dried up, with not much in stock. The Vietnam Coffee Association (Vicofa) said that Vietnam’s coffee export volume in the 2023-2024 crop year is estimated to decrease by 20% compared to the previous crop year, to 1.336 million tons.
Vietnam’s leading coffee export markets in recent times are still the EU, Japan, US, Russia… In which, the EU continues to be Vietnam’s largest coffee export market.
As for pepper, according to preliminary statistics of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), in the first 16 days of March 2024, Vietnam exported 12,368 tons of pepper; Of which, black pepper reached 10,518 tons, white pepper reached 1,850 tons. Total export turnover reached 53 million USD.
In the first 2 months of 2024, the average export price of our country’s pepper reached 4,022 USD/ton, an increase of 28.1% over the same period in 2023.
Currently, the average price of pepper in the Central Highlands and Eastern Nam Bo ranges from 92,000 – 95,000 VND/kg. Particularly in March 2024, domestic pepper mainly increased, on average from 500 – 2,000 VND/kg; Of which, Binh Phuoc increased by 500 VND; Ba Ria Vung Tau increased sharply by 1,500 VND; Dak Lak and Dak Nong increased to 2,000 VND.
Faced with the sharp increase in pepper prices, especially from December 2023, Ms. Hoang Thi Lien, President of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association, pointed to the cause: inventory shortage; The US market suddenly showed strong consumption in the last 3 months of the year, especially December. Along with that, the harvest season was late in Dak Nong. There is a temporary shortage of supply, leading to an increase in domestic prices.
Currently, many localities are speeding up pepper harvesting in the 2023-2024 crop year, but with pepper prices showing no signs of turning around, farmers are also limiting sales.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Huyen, Deputy Director of Prosi Thang Long Company, said that from 2023, pepper exports will have a sudden growth. Domestic pepper prices also increased from December 2023. 2024, many farmers and businesses expect it will be a bright year for pepper exports.
Many people expect pepper to continue to increase because over the years, pepper prices have dropped quite sharply and for a long time. Pepper will tend to increase and prices will stay high in 2024, Ms. Huyen said.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Huyen said that pepper prices still tend to escalate, so farmers also limit selling. Purchasing by businesses also becomes difficult. Businesses also need to wait for signals of the new season to make further decisions in the future.
The business already has orders for the second quarter. But there are still many importers who are wondering about importing now, when prices are continuously rising. They also wonder whether they should order now for the future. Because, the pepper season is also coming. If pepper prices fall during the season, it will be difficult for both buyers and sellers. The parties are quite cautious in ordering goods, Ms. Huyen shared.
According to Mr. Phan Minh Thong, Chairman of Phuc Sinh Group, currently in the coffee capital of the Central Highlands, from the beginning of the 2023-2024 coffee harvest, coffee prices have been steadily increasing and rising very quickly. The price of fresh coffee purchased in many places has exceeded 100,000 VND/kg. Pepper price is also about 94,000 VND/kg. Coffee prices are higher than pepper prices – something that has never happened in the past 25 years.
According to Mr. Phan Minh Thong, in the last days of March 2024, coffee prices increased beyond unimaginable levels, right at the Easter holiday in the West, where there are many customers and importers of Vietnamese coffee. the most (Easter – (Easter Day).
According to the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (Vicofa), prices have increased but the amount of Vietnamese coffee has gradually dried up. There is not much inventory in warehouses among businesses and farmers. Therefore, export volume from now until the end of the season will decrease.
As for pepper, according to the International Pepper Association (IPC), global pepper production in 2023 will reach 539,000 tons, down 4.3% compared to 2022. The decrease mainly comes from Brazil, India and Indonesia.
World pepper is entering the main harvest taking place in main producing countries including Vietnam, India and the South of Brazil. IPC forecasts that global pepper production in 2024 will continue to decrease by 1.1%, equivalent to 6,000 tons. Brazil and India are forecast to increase production in 2024, while decreasing in Vietnam. Vietnam’s pepper output is expected to reach 170,000 tons in 2024, down 10.5% compared to 2023.
