Preliminary statistics from the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA), accumulated from the beginning of the year to the end of November 2022, Vietnam exported 211,507 tons of pepper of all kinds, reaching an export value of 911.1 million USD. Compared to the same period last year, export volume decreased by 14.9%, equivalent to 37,015 tons. However, export turnover still increased by 34 million USD, equivalent to 3.9%.

It is estimated that for the whole year, Vietnam’s pepper exports will reach nearly 230,000 tons, a decrease of 13% in output, reaching a value of 970 million USD, an increase of more than 2% compared to 2021. If all spices are counted together, , export turnover in 2022 is estimated to reach 1.5 billion USD.

In addition to exporting, Vietnamese businesses also import pepper from other countries such as Brazil, Indonesia… for processing, processing and exporting with higher value. From the beginning of the year to the end of November 2022, Vietnam imported 34,273 tons, an increase of 48.9% over the same period.

In the context of common difficulties, the results achieved are a remarkable success for the pepper industry, showing that Vietnam’s spice industry is gradually gaining a foothold in the world value chain, especially still leading the world. about pepper export.

Vietnam has an advantage over some other pepper producing countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka, Cambodia… thanks to advantages from EVFTA. Specifically, the import tax on ground or crushed pepper exported to the EU decreased from 4% to 0%. In addition, Vietnam’s pepper industry is also highly appreciated for its processing capacity with the rate of processed goods currently accounting for about 30% of total export turnover.

According to experts, in the coming time, the pepper industry needs to focus on improving quality and processing rates to create added value and effectively exploit high-segment markets.
