Farmers in the provinces of Dak Lak, Dak Nong … are expanding their planting gardens, developing durian trees massively because the consumer market is good, the price is high… However, the hot development of durian trees is facing many risks. ro.

From the end of 2022, China officially “grants a visa” for Vietnamese durian fruit for official export to this market. Immediately, the price of durian increased, the consumer market was very good – despite the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic.
This is a very good signal for the agricultural industry, for Vietnamese farmers, especially in the agricultural areas of the Central Highlands provinces. However, even the “easy” market is China, official sugar imported agricultural products also have more strict requirements on food safety and quality standards, in order to be able to go abroad. in the process of preservation, processing, industrial production …
Therefore, eager to welcome a new market with attractive consumption and good price, but farmers need to be very alert before entering this international “playground”.
The phenomenon of massively felling and destroying thousands of hectares of coffee, pepper, cashew … to convert to durian cultivation is very worrying. Warning about the risk of disrupting the planning on planting area, on output and easily causing imbalance between supply and demand.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dak Lak province, in the project “Sustainable development of key fruit trees” implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the planning orientation of the country’s durian area to 2030 is only at the level of 75,000 ha. But now the country’s durian area has reached 110,000ha.
Dak Lak alone has more than 20,000 hectares of durian and is one of the localities with the largest area in the country. In which, the area for new harvest is about 40%, with an annual output of up to 150,000 tons. It is expected to reach 300,000 tons by 2030. Therefore, both the output and the area of durian cultivation in Dak Lak exceed the general plan of the provincial agricultural sector.
On the other hand, if it is developed massively, disrupts the planning on planting area, causes imbalance between supply and demand, without paying attention to technical processes, plant varieties, etc., it will lead to unsatisfactory product quality. Falling prices, even being rejected by the market, the consequences will be much more severe.
Not to mention, in addition to Vietnam, durian entering the Chinese market today also has fiercely competitive agricultural products such as Thailand, the Philippines …
Lessons from falling prices, farmers massively cut down planting areas that happened everywhere, bitterly. And the most current news is that the price of passion fruit is falling dramatically, making farmers miserable.
Currently, Gia Lai has a passion fruit material area of over 5,000 hectares, widely distributed across 15/17 districts, towns and cities. There are 3 large processing plants with total capacity up to hundreds of thousands of tons per year. 20 packing facilities and 19 growing areas have been assigned codes. But now passion fruit suddenly dropped from over 10,000 VND/kg, down to only 4,000 VND/kg. One of the reasons for the price drop is because the rate of getting grade 1 lemon is quite low.
When agricultural products are granted a planting area code (Production Unit Code – abbreviated as PUC), farmers not only produce according to a safe process, but also have to strictly follow the cultivation process, plant varieties, fertilizers, and drugs. plant protection… even how to irrigate and keep a log book. Thus, new agricultural products are both safe and meet the quality standards required by importers.
Very few passion fruit reach grade 1 currently for export, so the devaluation is a lesson for other agricultural products. Therefore, the current situation of hot development of durian growing area is considered to be harvested … tears.
