According to the Customs statistics report, in the first 6 months of this year, India imported 4,680 tons of pepper of all kinds with a turnover of 30.9 million USD, although it only increased by 9.96% in volume but increased sharply. up 45.53% in value over the same period last year.
If the export value of pepper to India in the first 6 months of 2011 is only 21.27 million USD, then the export value in the first 6 months of this year skyrocketed to 30.95 million USD, equivalent to an increase of 45.53 %.
The average export price in the first 6 months of last year reached 4,997 USD/ton, the average price in the same period of this year has increased to 6,613 USD/ton, equivalent to an increase of 32.34%, a very impressive figure.
Previously, India was the leading pepper exporting country in the world. However, this position had to be ceded to Vietnam because of the shrinking area, decreasing output due to the widespread cultivation of pepper by Indian farmers, low yield and increasing number of pests and diseases on pepper plants.
To have pepper for export, India has imported pepper from producing countries in Southeast Asia and neighboring island nation Sri Lanka for processing and re-export as well as to supplement domestic consumption.
By page Business Line, exports of India in the first 6 months of 2012 reached 10,197 tons of pepper of all kinds compared to 9,059 tons in the same period last year. In contrast, the import volume in the first 6 months of the year was 6,730 tons of pepper of all kinds compared to 6,288 tons imported in the same period of 2011.
Industry officials estimate Indian pepper production in 2012 will fall to between 43,000 tons and 45,000 tons, from 49,000 tons last year.
India is currently the third largest pepper producer in the world after Vietnam and Indonesia.
