The survey area is the districts with large pepper growing area of ​​the province, namely Bu Dop district (Binh Phuoc); Dak R’Lap (Dak Nong), Cu Kuin and Ea H’Leo (Dak Lak) and Dak Doa, Chu Puh (Gia Lai).

In each district, the delegation worked with the agricultural management agencies, namely the District Agriculture Departments, and leaders of the People’s Committees of the districts to get information about the local pepper production situation.

The results of working with 20 farmer households and 16 officials of Agricultural Extension Stations, Plant Protection and District Agricultural Officers show that:

Pepper garden is actively cared for

first.Compared to 2015, the newly planted pepper area in 2016 increased by 15-20%. Most of the newly planted area is planted to replace coffee and rubber. However, at present, the trend of new planting tends to decrease. In the next crop, farmers said that they only replanted old gardens, not planting new ones because farmers began to fear that there would be no output.

2.Since 2010/2012, seeing that pepper prices are getting better and better, all places have stepped up to increase the area. This area is estimated at 10-20% of the total area (only newly developed districts such as Dak Doa, this area accounts for 90% of the total pepper area of ​​the whole district) is starting to harvest the main crop 2016/2017 in January. 2-4 with high yield, average 5 tons/ha

3.However, it is expected that pepper gardens with more than 10 years of yield in the 2016/2017 crop that are about to be harvested will decrease by about 30% compared to the 2015/2016 crop, especially in districts that have developed pepper for a long time such as Chu Se, Chu Puh (Gia Lai), Ea Ktur Cu Kuin (Dak Lak) yield is reduced by 60-70%, there are many gardens with almost no fruit. The cause is said to be due to the first drought in 2016 most of the pepper gardens died and could not recover, although this year pests and diseases caused less damage than last year and were still well cared for.

4.Combining both the newly started exploitation area and the old area with reduced productivity, it is estimated that the output of the new crop 2016/2017 will increase by 15-20% compared to the output of the 2015/2016 crop. Therefore, 2017 pepper output nationwide is estimated at about 180,000 tons;

5.About 60% of households surveyed said that they still store pepper, an average of several tons per household.

6.All farmers and district agricultural managers know quite well about the situation of the pepper industry, especially the problem of residues of banned substances and the need for sustainable farming, so 100% of the households agree. Knowing that they want the pepper garden to develop sustainably, they mainly use manure mixed with probiotics to fertilize the plants and at the same time limit the use of pesticides. In this crop, there are very few pests and diseases, the pepper plants are lined with solid manure, so there is almost no need to use drugs, especially almost no use of Carbendazim.

7.In addition, all surveyed farmers showed that they have a strong grasp of planting techniques, most of them no longer focus on increasing productivity at all costs like many years ago, farmers are interested in growing in a more sustainable way. Thai uses live pillars, pruning branches, creating canopy to create a cool environment, keeping moisture in the dry season, making drainage ditches in the rainy season, investing in irrigation systems to actively supply water for plants, making nets for pepper gardens. So the pepper gardens are growing quite well, sustainably, the quality of pepper in the coming time will definitely be improved.

8.All major pepper growing regions are promoting the implementation of models of farmers self-associating and combining with businesses to produce clean pepper because farmers are worried about excess output in the coming time, importing countries Export requires clean pepper, so if production in the old direction only focuses on productivity, there will be no output.

9.However, farmers are very worried because of the current management of seeds, fertilizers and pesticides, these input trading companies often advertise strongly, causing information disturbances that make farmers unable to distinguish. What kind of chemicals? How to use? Will cause residues, affecting the quality of export pepper.

ten.The 2016/2017 pepper harvest is expected to be collected later this year than the previous year due to the early drought this year and late rain in May-June, which affects the differentiation of flower sprouts at the beginning of the crop. Currently, the Southeast and Central Highlands regions are not sure about pepper. At the end of the year, this year’s harvest time in the Central Highlands provinces will continue to have rain, affecting the collection of ND, which is expected to start collecting around February 2017, with a full harvest in March.
